How to see the content of .img file.

Hi all
I want to see the content of .img file like initrd.img in Linux.
How we can open the file?

initrd.img file is a compressed cpio image of root file system which is used by kernel while booting. You can view its content by uncompressing it. Follow these steps:- 

  • copy the initrd.img file to some directory like
              #cp /boot/initrd.img .
  • Rename it to make it gunzip extension like
            #mv initrd.img initrd.gz
  • uncompress it 
            #gunzip initrd.gz 
       It will make a initrd file in your current directory which is actually a cpio file. So to uncompress cpio file run this command as below:-
#cpio -idv <initrd

it will uncompress and create all its content in current directory.

If any body have an idea what is the command to check how many users were accessing any volume like /dev/sda8 in linux.
