FROM THE EDITOR |
What are your kids dressing up as this year for Halloween? Will you dress up too? Later this week, we'll be posting some questions on our Facebook page - be sure to leave your answer!
Of course there are a ton of great events this weekend! Sunday morning, support a Long Island family as they raise money for a great cause at Alex's Run for a Reason at Newbridge Road Park in Bellmore. A 2 mile family fun run/walk and family fun day with children's activities, refreshments and raffle prizes will start at 10am (registration will start at 830am). Then in the afternoon, see a live musical performance by Bari Koral Family Rock Band at the Hicksville Fall Festival on Sunday! We've written about her in the past and she's one of our absolute favorites. If you get a chance, be sure to check her out.
Have you heard of Twitter? Do you use it? For those of you who haven't heard of it, Twitter is a social media platform where people can network and microblog, sending messages called tweets that are less than 140 characters. There are a lot of large brands (JetBlue, Kolcraft and the NY Yankees), celebrities (Perez Hilton, Demi Moore and Howie Mandel) and local brands (Mitzvah Market, Teresa's Family Cleaning and Stroller Strides Suffolk) who tweet regularly and it's a great way to stay in touch with friends and stay posted on world, local and community happenings. Many people find out about major news events on Twitter before they are broadcast on traditional media like radio or television. There is a pretty large group of Long Islanders who use Twitter on a regular basis and have networked at in-person local "Tweetups". This Saturday, they are using their connections to do good locally with a food drive at Panera Bread locations in Farmingdale, Rockville Centre, Bridgehampton and Hauppauge between noon and 4pm. Long Islanders are encouraged to visit one of the locations, hang out, have fun and help out by bringing a donation of non-perishable food, supermarket gift cards or cash/check for Island Harvest, Long Island's leading hunger relief organization. Last year's Tweetup food drive raised over 150 pounds of food for Long Islanders in need, and this year, the organizers hope to triple that. For more information, visit www.LITweetup.com.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. Visit our blog to read about how two major corporations are helping to raise money and make major donations to the cause.
If you have a minute, can you vote for Long Island Parent Source as Best Long Island Based Website in the Long Island Press's Best of Long Island 2011? We appreciate it! Have a great week!
