Eleven candidates are running in a Feb. 5 special Democratic primary election for a chance to fill New Jersey’s 11th congressional district seat, previously held by now-governor Mikie Sherrill. |
The candidate who wins the February special primary will appear on a special general election ballot on Apr. 16. They will run against the sole Republican in the race, Joe Hathaway, to determine who will complete Sherrill’s term through 2026. |

In-person early voting for the 11th congressional district special primary election is Jan. 29 to Feb. 3. The district includes parts of Morris, Essex, and Passaic counties. A list of early voting centers is available online. Voters interested in voting by mail must apply for a mail-in ballot by Jan. 29. New Jersey residents ages 16+ can apply to be an election poll worker within their county. People living in Morris, Essex, and Passaic counties can apply to work during the 11th congressional district special primary election. In-person early voting is from Jan. 29 to Feb. 3.
