MoreVia Tim Henderson at Stateline, immigrant detentions surpassed 70,000 in January, and a growing percentage — nearly three-quarters — of people in detention have no criminal convictions. The 70,000 figure is a new high.

CVS Pharmacy will no longer be a part of Horizon NJ Health, N.J.'s largest health insurance provider, starting Apr. 30 because of a contract dispute. CVS will be out-of-network for more than 800,000 publicly insured children and adults in N.J. under the Medicaid and NJ Family Care programs. Affected patients should seek new in-network pharmacies at horizonnjhealth.com/findadoctor, according to Horizon NJ Health. The failed agreement comes after Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield announced it will lay off 242 workers, or 5% of its workforce, by Apr. 26, according to the insurance company. That includes workers at both the Newark and Hopewell headquarters. The layoffs follow a recent $100 million settlement with N.J. over alleged over-billing.

Good Friday morning!

The Democratic primary to replace Gov. Mikie Sherrill in the 11th Congressional District is too close to call. It’s between former U.S. Rep. Tom Malinowski and progressive activist Analalia Mejia.

Several outlets called the race early for Malinowski thanks to his solid lead in early votes, but that was before they saw day-of votes breaking heavily toward Mejia . By late last night, Mejia had taken a narrow lead . An upset is now looking more like a probability than just a possibility.

Either candidate would be the heavy favorite to win the special general election on April 16 against Republican Joe Hathaway, who won unopposed. Mejia’s progressivism might be a tougher sell in a competitive district’s general election. But this is a Democratic district in a political environment that favors Democrats.

The biggest loser here isn’t one of the other nine Democratic candidates. It’s AIPAC which spent millions against Malinowski despite him being a longtime ally. Now they’ve damaged their relationship with Malinowski, who, if he wins, could wind up back on the Foreign Affairs Committee, or they helped elect the AOC- and Bernie Sanders-backed Mejia, who was by far the most critical candidate of Israel . Could “The Squad” get a new member from New Jersey?

I spoke to two Democratic operatives on Tuesday who had anecdotes about talking to voters who had planned to vote for Malinowski, but then they either changed votes or were second-guessing their choice based on AIPAC’s attacks on him for voting to increase ICE funding in 2019 (along with the majority of Democrats).

The biggest winners, aside from Malinowski or Mejia? Probably Democrats’ midterm hopes. Turnout exceeded that of the regular June 2024 Democratic primary. Back then, it was about 52,000. Last night, with 87 percent coutnted, it was 59,000. Granted, Sherrill faced only token opposition in the 2024 race, and the Senate contest at the top of the ticket had mostly resolved itself. But this was an election on a Thursday in January. To beat a regularly scheduled primary in turnout is just the latest sign of a highly engaged Democratic electorate, if Democrats’ candidate recruitment bonanza didn’t convince you already.

There is, of course, still a regular primary to be held in June. So when the last votes are counted from last night, it remains to be seen whether that primary is contested.

New Jersey Department of Health seeks blood and platelet donations from eligible residents amid a statewide shortage, according to a press release. NJDOH attributes the shortage to the recent winter storm and flu season. The state has a short supply of Type O, A-, and B- red blood cells, and less than one day’s supply of single donor platelets. Eligible residents can make an appointment to give blood at American Red Cross Services, Hunterdon Healthcare, Miller-Keystone Blood Center, New York Blood Center, RWJBarnabas Health, and Vitalant Blood Services.
