Don't Fall for Fake State Pension Consultation Emails

Cybersecurity laptop padlock icon.png

Scammers are impersonating the New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits, sending emails offering free pension consultations. The emails are sent from .com addresses instead of .gov and direct you to schedule Zoom appointments through fraudulent websites. They want to steal your information, compromise your pension account, or redirect your payments.

The real Division of Pensions and Benefits does not use Zoom for appointments or send unsolicited consultation offers. If you get an email offering pension help, don't click any links. Go directly to the official NJDPB website or call using the number listed on their official site.

New Jersey Residents with Sickle Cell Anemia Can Now Access Medical Cannabis

Cannabis leaf.png

Sickle cell anemia is now a qualifying condition for New Jersey's Medicinal Cannabis Program. If you live with sickle cell disease and experience chronic pain or other symptoms, you can now enroll in the program to access medical cannabis as a treatment option.

The recent addition of sickle cell anemia expands access to therapeutic options that may help manage the chronic pain and complications associated with the blood disorder. This joins other qualifying conditions already covered by the program, including chronic pain, cancer, PTSD, glaucoma, and seizure disorders.

New Jersey residents with sickle cell anemia can enroll in the Medicinal Cannabis Program now. The process includes registering with the state and obtaining certification from a qualified healthcare provider.

New Jersey Spring Turkey Hunting Permit Applications Open Now

If you hunt wild turkey in New Jersey, applications for 2026 Spring Turkey Permits are open now. You can apply online or at any license agent. The application deadline is February 22.

New Jersey uses a lottery system to award permits for specific hunting areas and time periods. Popular areas and periods—especially Period A and Period E in central and southern New Jersey—often sell out in the first or second lottery, so apply early for the best chance at getting your preferred area and time.

Review the permit quota table before applying to help determine your application strategy. You can edit your application online after submission up until the February 22 deadline. If you win permits in both lotteries, you must claim both awarded permits.

Scammers Are Sending Fake Toll Payment Texts

Scammers are texting New Jersey residents claiming they have unpaid tolls and threatening late fees. The messages link to fake websites designed to look like the Motor Vehicle Commission and steal your payment information.

The fraudulent sites use URLs ending in .help instead of .gov. The NJ Motor Vehicle Commission does not send texts about toll payments—only appointment reminders.

If you get a text about unpaid tolls, forward it to 7726 (SPAM) and delete it. Don't click the link or provide any information. To check your toll account, manually type your toll service's official website into your browser.

AAPD Webinar: Understanding New Medicaid Requirements

Join the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) for an important webinar on the new Medicaid work requirements. Starting on January 1, 2027, these requirements will significantly impact many Medicaid beneficiaries.

The budget reconciliation bill, or H.R.1, was signed into law on July 4, 2025. This bill cuts nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid and threatens the health coverage of 17 million Americans. It will cause a major crisis in our healthcare system, which already faces difficulty supporting people with disabilities and has been under increased strain since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. Now that we are in 2026, the changes from this bill will begin to take effect soon, and the disability community must prepare for upcoming shifts in our healthcare system.

The goal of this webinar is to review expected changes, discuss how we should prepare for them, and highlight what we can do moving forward to lessen the harm of the changes. We aim to help our community understand the challenges ahead, while also recognizing that advocacy is always necessary and affirming that our fight to preserve Medicaid continues.

When: February 18, 2026, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM ET
Where: Register for the Zoom Webinar here. ASL and CART will be provided.
Who: Our panelists are

  • Rachel Patterson, Disability and Health Policy Expert, Patterson&Meek
  • David Machledt, Senior Policy Analyst, National Health Law Program
  • Adela Flores-Brennan, Colorado Medicaid Director

Our expert panelists will provide a comprehensive overview of the new rules, focusing on what they mean for people with disabilities specifically. We will discuss:

  • The core work requirements and their implementation;
  • Which individuals and groups are exempt from the work requirements;
  • How to prepare to submit the necessary documentation to certify compliance or claim an exemption;
  • The expected timeline for receiving more detailed information and deadlines throughout 2026; and
  • How things may differ from state to state.

This session is crucial for anyone receiving Medicaid benefits who wants to learn how to keep their coverage under the new rules. Don't miss this chance to get informed and prepare in advance for these changes!
