Rep. Tom Kean pushes for national disability ombudsman, modeled after NJ watchdog
November 3 at 1:39PM
 ·

I joined the New Jersey Legislative Disability Caucus’ quarterly session to discuss the creation of the Ombudsman office seven years ago. This office supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.

When I sponsored the legislation establishing our state’s first Ombudsman office, I wanted to ensure that families had a true advocate — someone to help them navigate complex systems and be their voice in government.

My team and I are currently working on ways to model this type of office at the federal level, so that families across the country can benefit from the same support and advocacy NJ families have received.

Thank you to the Caucus and to Ombudsman Paul Aronsohn for your tireless work on behalf of our most vulnerable communities.

Caucus Co-Chair, Senate Majority Leader M. Teresa Ruiz championed the legislation that created this groundbreaking office and lead this meeting.

New Jersey governor-elect Mikie Sherrill will resign from her congressional seat this week to transition to her next position. A special election will be called to fill Sherrill’s vacancy in the 11th district, which includes part of Morris, Essex, and Passaic counties. Nine candidates have filed to run for the seat, including former Rep. Tom Malinowski and Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill. When a congressional vacancy occurs in N.J., a special primary election must occur between 70 and 76 days after the writ of election is issued. The special general election must follow no later than 70 days after the special primary.
