International Day of Persons with Disabilities

December 3 is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), a day established by the United Nations to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in our society. Each year on December 3rd, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities promotes the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day raises awareness of the political, economic, social and cultural aspects disability affects people around the world.

    Key goals
    • Promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities in all spheres of society.
    • Increase awareness of the challenges they face.
    • Encourage full, equal, and effective participation in society.
    • Promote an understanding of disability issues.
    • Mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities.
    Themes
    • The annual theme for the IDPD changes, focusing on different aspects of disability inclusion. For example, the 2024 theme was "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future".
    • The 2025 theme is "Fostering Disability Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress". This theme focuses on building societies where persons with disabilities are fully included to advance social development and progress for everyone
    How to get involved
    • Learn about the specific challenges and achievements of people with disabilities.
    • Support initiatives that promote accessibility and inclusion.
    • Host training sessions at work to foster an inclusive culture.
    • Recognize neurodiversity in the workplace.
    • Engage with events and activities organized by the United Nations and other organizations.
    .
    • Focus:
The theme highlights the need to create a society that is participatory and progressive for all individuals.
    • Call to action:
It serves as an invitation to take action to ensure that progress on social development includes everyone.
    • Significance:
This observance builds on previous efforts by reiterating the commitment to a more just, inclusive, equitable, and sustainable world for all people.

Who Do People Think of When They Think About Disability?

When we think about groups of people, we often think about the most ‘typical’ member of that group, called a prototype. For example, when asked to think about a man, most people will think of a man that is white. While prototypes are designed to help our brains process information and categorize things, such as shapes or colors for example, when it comes to people, who we think of as prototypical is often informed but ideas we take in from society. The problem is that when we have prototypes of people, our brains can use this information to make snap judgements about people, including ones that are based on stereotypes. This can contribute to discrimination.

The aim of this study was to examine who the prototypical disabled person is. To do so, we had 230 people complete an online survey where I asked them to picture a disabled person who just experienced discrimination and then asked them several follow up questions about who they thought about.
