Join Us: AAPD National Community Event Wednesday, April 29, 6:30 PM ET

Dear AAPD community,

AAPD’s 2026 National Community Event is next Wednesday at 6:30 PM ET! This event celebrates the strength of the disability community, uplifts the progress we have made, and discusses how we can take collective action to protect disability rights.

The National Community Event will include a panel about authentic disability representation in the media. We will be highlighting HBO Max’s show The Pitt, which has been groundbreaking in its commitment to inclusive storytelling. Through storylines about supported decision-making, Medicaid cuts, neurodivergence, and more, The Pitt excels at depicting the complexity of disability in a nuanced and accurate manner.

Disability representation in the media and effective policy change are deeply connected to each other. Thoughtful disability representation makes a difference by altering cultural narratives surrounding disability. In order for policy and systems change to meaningfully happen, culture change has to occur as well.

Our panelists will discuss stories on The Pitt related to disability and how other creatives can portray disability authentically. The panel will feature:

  • R. Scott Gemmill creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the HBO Max medical drama The Pitt

  • Tal Anderson, autistic actress who plays Becca King on the show

It will be moderated by Eric Garcia, an autistic journalist and author of We’re Not Broken: Changing The Autism Conversation.

The National Community Event is completely free, virtual, and open to all members of the disability community and our allies.

Reserve your spot now at this link to ensure you receive the link to stream at home.

We can’t wait to see you there,
The AAPD Team
