ELISE'S REVIEW OF SAM PHILLIPS'S DON'T DO ANYTHING
With a mixture of Martinis and Bikinis’s punch and A Boot and a Shoe’s
introspection, Don’t Do Anything will not disapoint dedicated fans.
The artist, known to many as the voice behind the “la las” on the
series Gilmore Girls, combines the right amount of powerful lyrics and
catchy beats to create her best album to date.
While her 1994 hit, Martinis and Bikinis got a lot of attention, most
of the songs on that album are on edge. Strong words, powerful beats.
The albums that followed were on the softer side. This new treasure
incorporates both elements into meaningful songs.
Fans of Gilmore Girls will recognize the melody behind the title track
“Don’t Do Anything”, as it aired many times of the show, accompanied
by Phillips’ famous “la las”. In fact, the entire album has a Gilmore
vibe. Phillips’s years on the show have influenced her creative
direction… or maybe her creative direction influenced the show all
these years. It goes both ways really. I can’t help but picture a sad
Rory while listenning to “Under the Night”. “Watching Out Of This
World” reflects the lighter moments on the show; here I see the Stars
Hollow gazebo, with twinkle lights, at nigh. Her “la las” actually
make it into the song “Flowers Up”.
“My Career In Chemistry” is a perfect example of this artist’s
uniqueness. A melody like no other, with words that are nowhere near
bland. “Another Song” has an introduction like no other, which
reflects the 20s influence of the song. It is raw: piano and beautiful
words.
Gilmore Girls’s fans who have yet to discover this artist should
procure themselves this album. It’s never too late to experience the
Sam Phillips’s sound.
