The Dark Elves are a sadistic, cruel race who dwell in the cold, bleak land of Naggaroth after long ago being exiled from Ulthuan. The Dark Elf military consists of small numbers of highly-disciplined elite troops which march to war alongside hydras and other beasts. The Dark Elves sail the seas in huge Black Arks, taking slaves to boost their economy, or to sacrifice to their bloodthirsty gods.

In battle, the Dark Elves are master skirmishers and duelists. They have mediocre cavalry and artillery, no healing magic, and all infantry above Tier 2 are unshielded. They do however have arguably the best low-tier archers in the game (along with Wood Elves) with the powerful armor piercing damage on Darkshards, as well as the best stalking archers (Shades) for lategame. Their monsters are few but of good quality, and their Scourgerunner Chariots are a multifunctional powerhouse. Their best defensive infantry (Sisters) are very fast. Overall their army is mobile, partially camouflaged and brutally damaging with missile fire.

Eventually the Dark Elves were defeated and cast out, fleeing west and establishing a new kingdom in the cold land of Naggaroth across the sea. This harsh land, as well as attacks from Beastmen and Chaos, has forged the Druchii into an a merciless and brutal race. From their dark cities, they range across the seas, taking slaves for their industry and bloody sacrifices. They will not rest until they have reconquered Ulthuan and every one of their hated kin is dead or in chains.

Shadowblade is a prominent character from the tabletop version of Warhammer. He is a master assassin that works for Crone Hellebron, and has appeared in every Dark Elf army book. Felicion, however, never appeared before Total War: Warhammer II.

The following minor Dark Elves factions are found in campaign mode. All the Total War: Warhammer II minor factions are found in the Eye of The Vortex campaign, but not all of them are present in the Mortal Empires one. In Total War: Warhammer III, all the minor factions from the previous game are present in the Immortal Empires campaign:

The Dark Elves have a unit roster which is decently varied. They have infantry, cavalry, strong missile troops and artillery. A few monsters and flying units are also available. Dark Elf troops have fairly good leadership and speed, and tend to be expensive, as they rely on quality over quantity.

Murderous Prowess is once-per-battle ability that many Dark Elves units have, giving them significant bonuses after a certain amount of causalities for the player's army and enemy have been reached, while some units have Murderous Mastery, a more powerful and longer-lasting version. Murderous Prowess progress can be tracked during battle by a meter beside the balance of power on the UI. Once the kill threshold is reached, Murderous Prowess and Murderous Mastery are immediately activated for all Dark Elf units that have them. Make sure that more of your enemies' casualties have fueled Murderous Prowess rather than your own units or else your army might not last long enough to take advantage of it. Having units idle during this period can waste the benefits Murderous Prowess provides. Keeping track of the meter's progress can allow a player to set up favorable engagements beforehand and maximize the benefits each unit receives. Conversely, when opposing the Dark Elves, disengaging or activating your own buffs as Murderous Prowess activates can mitigate some of the damage your own army takes.

Slaves are a unique resource for the Dark Elves in campaign that they must manage, alongside money. Slaves are captured after a victorious battleand transferred to owned provinces. More slaves in a province provides bonuses to money income while lowering public order. Slaves can be managed from the Slaves Menu, access via a button in the lower right while viewing the campaign map. Slaves can also be sacrificed in rites (see below).

Black Arks are unique naval units for the Dark Elves which enable mobile unit recruitment at sea and provide army abilities to nearby armies in battle. They act a little like a mobile settlement, and are recruited via the Sacrifice to Mathlann, except for the Blessed Dread who's Black Ark capacity increases with the number of occupied Major Ports.

Chaos Corruption is spread by Morathi and her Cult of Pleasure faction in the campaign. If a player is using another Dark Elves faction and confederates with Morathi then she will stop spreading corruption. In Total War: Warhammer III, Morathi and her faction spread Slaanesh Corruption instead.

Why did they split the one faction up into 5 different factions but some of which have literally 2 models and how would you even play with them now a days? Is it even possible or viable to run a Dark Elf Army? Do you get any Allegiance abilities or command traits aside from generic order?

To give you a short run down, the old Dark Elves have been split into 5 factions: the Daughters of Khaine (former Witch Elves and Blood Cauldrons, now expanded into the blood crazy fanatics lead by Morathi), the Darkling Covens (enthralled followers of powerful sorcerer, home to most of the old dark elves infantry), Order Serpentis (elven knights + hydra and dragons), Scourge Privateers (seafarers, monster hunter, criminals, home of the corsairs and beast masters of old) and the Shadow Blades (Assassins).

This split happened at the beginning of AoS. Most armies had grown too big during the lifetime of Warhammer Fantasy and lost their focus. Instead there are now many smaller but more thematic forces. If you ever wanted to field a whole army of fanatic followers of Khaine, you can do that now.
Additionally, the old separation between High/Dark/Wood Elves is gone. The sundering and the elven civil war are now only long forgotten memories. Each faction has something unique now but you can easily field former High elves and Dark elves in one army.

If you want to use your old Dark Elves collection you have three ways of doing that: download the currently available Warscrolls from the AoS App or the GW website and field them as a Grand Alliance Order army. Second, you can field your elven infantry as a Darkling Coven army (their unique army abilities, warlord traits and artifacts are in the current Generals Handbook) and use your ally points (up to 20%) to include units from the other factions. Or the third option is the download the Warhammer Legends Battletome: Dark Elves. This PDF has AoS rules for every former Dark Elves unit (including out-of-production) but they lack point costs. So you will have to talk to your enemy about the size of the game.

Seems like the way to run it would be the Darkling Covens + Allies way right? I would want maybe 1 assassin, maybe wild riders, a fleetmaster and a unit of Black Ark Corsairs and the rest to be the main Dark Elf force. I was thinking of buying very slow and starting with Skirmish rules and eventually, later on, building up to a whole army if I liked how they played in Skirmish.

Maybe I just go with a straight elf list? I could get my cold ones (stormwind), Infantry horde (palace guard), and dragons, but I then I would have to give up gargoyles, shadow hounds, shadow hulk and summoner crone?

With Gargoyles you have the chaff you would need to prevent most charges to ever destroy your regiments of hard hitters, and you can also use tall spear regiments or hordes (I kinda like 3x tall spear regiments) to stop the quick chargers and then I can just smash them to bits with a unit like Blade Dancers (and banechant of course).

So you are saying that you find the elves lack of chaff options to be an issue, or that having quality chaff makes list building easier? I have heard this from lots of groups. However, in my meta I see lots of grind-y armies with high defense, regeneration, and healing. Chaff laden armies struggle against these unless the chaff flies and the scenario spreads out objectives. To beat these armies, the approach has been point-efficient punch (alpha strike), and this is the primary angle from which I was trying to create a Twilight Kin list.
