Asof mid 2022 I understood no driver was available to match the S1500 scanner with then current Mac OS. I have Sonoma 14 and would like to hook up my S1500. Has the driver situation improved or do I need to throw the scanner away with my old PC?
Did you get it to work? Did you use VueScan? I might get that in the future, but for now, I found this 2 year old YouTube video which provides a link to download the software for free and it still works on Sonoma!: =zLdI38Q3ZMw
I purchased VueScan Professional in 2010 to drive an unsupported Canon scanner at that time, and that scanner still works with the current VueScan on macOS Sonoma. I have never paid for a VueScan software update in 13 years, nor do I benefit in any way from mentioning VueScan here.
While the Fujitsu ScanSnap s1500 continued to work for years on Windows, it has recently been known to have some compatibility issues with Windows 10 and Windows 11. In particular, the ScanSnap Manager and ScanSnap Home applications are not fully compatible anymore. This was frustrating for users who rely on these applications to scan and manage their documents.
How does this work? VueScan is compatible with the s1500 scanner from Fujitsu. We reverse engineered how the scanner worked and how it communicates with the original software. Then we built a custom driver and included it in VueScan. VueScan automatically detects the edges of each page and then crop, deskew and exposure filters are applied to ensure the best possible scan. You can also modify the scanned pages before saving them to a file (PDF, JPG, etc.).
If you're using Windows and you've installed a Fujitsu driver, VueScan's built-in drivers won't conflict with this. If you haven't installed a Windows driver for this scanner, VueScan will automatically install a driver.
I was wondering if you were aware of the issue with the ScanSnap scanners where the blue light keeps blinking when you open the top and the ScanSnap button on the task bar shows the scanner is not ready to scan?
Brooks Duncan helps individuals and small businesses go paperless. He's been an accountant, a software developer, a manager in a very large corporation, and has run DocumentSnap since 2008. You can find Brooks on Twitter at @documentsnap or @brooksduncan. Thanks for stopping by.
Double click on Windows Image Acquisition, go to the tab that says Log On, and then click on Local System Account,
and Allow Service to Interact with Desktop. Click apply, and then Ok on the little pop up.
Then go back to the tab at the top that says General (next to Log On),
and stop the service, and then start it. If it gives you an error message, reboot the computer and then test

Dave (from 2018),
Thanks for your detailed instructions. Those worked, and I hope that puts this problem to bed. Problems started with Scansnap downloaded the new Scansnap Home to replace Scanscap Organizer. I used to have this problem with Organizer, but with Home, it happened EVERY time I tried to use the scanner.
Lately, I have the same problem as Terri Lane!
The blink of blue light; reset and download a new driver, it does not solve the problem.
Is the Windows 10 problem or the Scansnap S1300i software issue?
The scanner is useless now!
I am right there with you. Wireless scanning with Scansnap ix500 and Windows 10 should not be so difficult. Scansnap has failed to update drivers, making my life impossible. I am looking in to buying one of those Xerox Documates you mention.
Thank you for this solution!
I had tried the recovery tool several times with no success, reinstalled ScanSnap manager a few times before it would start flashing again a couple of days later. This appears to have worked for me! Thanks!
The only way I made it work was to remove the software and re-install from scratch. Never had a problem after re-install. The process is included in the discussion. One observation is that it always worked on a usb-2 port, if you have that option available to you
The first time this happened I took it to get it diagnosed and it just began working for him for no reason. I had just finished successfully scanning some receipts and closed the scanner and program, opened it to scan one more and got the dreaded blinking light again. What do you think is the cause?
Thank you!! I cannot stand how annoying the lose of connection is. The hardware works very well. I love the actual scanner, but I am constantly annoyed when trying to get the thing to scan to the computer!!
my scansnap ix500 the blue light in the scan button is on all the time whether the door close or open and the orange light is off. it seems the unit is dead, no reset is heard when the door is open. Any Idea?
please help
This worked for my client, thank you so much! Traditionally we always just re-installed the manager software and it would work on reboot, but with remote sites/slow WAN links this was always a pain, so hopefully this continues to be a solution!
Usually, I have to disconnect the computer connection and the power source on the ScanSnap and then re-boot my computer. After the computer is back up and running, I reconnect the cords on the back of the S300 and then it works for another few weeks!
DocumentSnap was created by Brooks Duncan (that's me). I started it in 2008 as I was going through my paperless journey. Now I share what works (and what doesn't) so you know exactly how to go paperless yourself.
There is s solution now. JSE offers at a commercial TWAIN driver for the Fujitsu ScanSnap scanner models. If you still like to use the SnapScan with your dental software you can use the free trial version. I have a iX1500 but it should run with the older models as well, at least with iX500.
Without a twain or WAI driver this scanner is worthless to me. Not even good for a boat anchor.
I design software for municipalities and had planned to distribute this as part of my package
My software currently uses several other brands of scanner, but the Fujitsu looked very appealing because of it speed
My software scans directly into my program which files using my own method (usually by parcel ID), and provides a thumbnail
Good point! Fujitsu has also made it much easier to send scans straight to Acrobat, which overcomes the biggest reason that the lack of a TWAIN driver was a problem. I still see more of these Fujitsu scanners in offices than any other model.
Great post on this scanner. I had been searching for a solution for a while and it looks like the best bet may be to return this scanner since I, also use specialized dental software that requires a TWAIN.
So from your expertise, is there no way to have the scanner work with a software program? We are using TAM (Applied Systems) that hold our clients and information. I want to be able to send my scan document not to just my email, but to the clients file on the computer in TAM. I have tried everything and I am sure there is some way to do this. Can you help me with this?
Hi Pete,
I could not test ScanSnap Organizer as the version to download here would not accept my S1500 serial and says The entered SER. NO. is invalid. Try again. The letter I or O is not used in SER. NO. so I have just been using the ScanSnap Manager software located here -inst2-v7.html for my Windows 11 machine.
Hi, I tried uninstalling all vestiges of the old ScanSnap this morning and believe I installed what you have pointed us to in the new link below but I still get the following message when I plug in the scanner: USB device not recognized / The last USB device you connected to this computer malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. Hoping you have a solution as I really want this to work.
But now Windows keeps trying to re-apply this update brearking again. Will try your suggestion above and remove scanner in device manager and scansnap and re-install.
Will report back what happens
One last bit of clarification. The Windows 11 update KB5012643 is in the Microsoft Release Preview Channel, so its not rolled out publicly yet. I reported to MS Feedback, so might be fixed before it ships??
Its also labeled Windows 11 Build 22000.651 (KB5012643)
Worked like a charm!! Solved my compatibility problems with Windows 11. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was getting soooo frustrated. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it would not. Problem solved.
Hi Simon, you saved my day. I am using the Scansnap S1500 on an MSI Bravo 17 Notebook with Windows 11 Pro Ver. 22H2 and I can confirm that after removing the drivers, rebooting and installing the drivers and net framework, then plugging in the scanner it works.
Greetings from Germany
Great news Jen glad all my fiddling around to get this working keeps helping people. Thanks for the well wishes from Germany I would love to visit one day as im from Australia the closest I got to Germany was Switzerland back in 2007.
i just disabled scansnap online update in windows 11 startup.. hopefully this will stop it from trying to continually hijack my machine and force me to go through a reinstall as described in your blog (thank you) Hopefully it works.. to do this.. go to search on win11, type startup and scroll down to the above named program and turn it off. I have had to reinstall the working driver 3x now from their awful update prompt.
