While reading Medea I couldn't help but wonder why the children of
Medea never seemed to be present. At the beginning, the NURSE is
speaking to the TUTOR and they are talking about the plot of Kreon to
send Medea and her children into exile, well it sort of shocked me
when I realized the children had been standing there the whole time!
It might just be me but, I just don't think you talk about that sort
of thing in front of children!

Also, I thought that it was strange that Medea shouts out that she
hates her children and speaks of cursing them, yet they are never
refered to as crying or responding in any way! Wow, if my mom had
shouted that at me I would definitely be responding in some way!

I noticed that too about the children, that they are never really
present in the story except when they are killed by Medea. I think
that the children were the most tragic characters in the story, so
keeping their thoughts and emotions to a complete minimum seemed
strange.

My guess would be that perhaps it was symbollic of the times, I mean
there was probably that whole 'children should be seen and not heard'
concept back in the day and it was represented in the story by keeping
the childrens lines to a minimum. At least they probably didn't
realize that they delivered the poisoned dress to the princess and
killed her. They would have probably felt guilty as well as depressed
from all the events with their father and mother, and that would have
been even more tragic.
