The theme of man verses nature is evident throughout the entire work.
We saw that as soon as Enkidu starts becoming a man he immediately
loses touch with nature because man and nature are natural enemies.
Man must overtake nature to prosper, but man is in a dilimea because
he needs nature to survive. Therefore the struggle can never end. The
Bull of Heaven, an earthquake, was unstoppable to the 100% humans of
Uruk. However, man took a bite at nature when Gilgamesh chopped down
the cedars of the Land of the Humbaba to the banks of the Euphrates
making the land safe for humans. Gilgamesh tried to overtake nature
until the very end. Death is a part of nature every human faces and
usually tries to avoid. His search for everlasting life was the
ultimate quest against nature. The day comes for us all when we can no
longer run from it anymore.
