Books 1-4 tells of Telemakhos journey into manhood. Do you feel that
he was adequately prepared to rule the kingdom of his father if by
chance, Odysseus, never returned to Ithaca? Some might say yes -
others might say no. Do you think his success would rely on the gods
and the strong influence of the goddess Athena? Ponder this....

Athena served a large role in helping Telemakhos cross over to the
role of man from child. She may have lent guidiance in the direction
he needed to take in retrieving the answers he needed to know of who
is father actually was, but she did not interfer with his decisions or
acts once the voyage stared. She even stayed back with the ship when
his adventure took him over land to the wedding cermonyed and allowed
him to make those decision needed of a man. She was again looking out
for Odysseus, by providing support to his son.

It took Odysseus stringing the bow before Telemakhos realizes that he
is his father's son. This means that he needed his father in order to
become a successful heir. If Odysseus had not returned, I believe
Telemakhos whould have been killed after his mother was forced into an
unhappy marriage by the over-bearing Antinoos. This track would have
caused even more devastation than the trip of Odysseus and his
sailors, and that is why the gods, especially Athena, did not allow
for this to become more of a tragedy than it already was going to
be.
