Two intensive days of training of the Core Group members of CERI, the Campaign for Electoral Reforms in India. After a short period of lull, as it happens in any campaign, the Core Group members woke up to the challenges ahead. We had completed a Scholars training last month in Orissa that covered five states of Orissa, West Bengal, Chattishgar, Jarkhand and Bihar. Already three months ago we had decided that Core Group members should equip themselves to take sessions in big conferences instead of depending only on M C Raj, as it has happened in the past. Twelve members assembled in Booshakthi Kendra for two full days of skill training on 15 and 16 September 2012. Following on the previous trainings on concept building for Proportional Representation system, huddled themselves up in small groups and prepared PPT preparations basing on the knowledge that they had acquired till now on PR system. A group of better equipped scholars, namely Jyothi, Leena, Vivek and Goldy provided background support to the groups under the leadership of M C Raj. At the end it was a tremendous result. Each group came up with a clear understanding of PR system with which they can now spread the concepts into India even if M C Raj is not present anywhere. Raj said that for him this is a big achievement as he visualized it already in the beginning of the campaign that there should be a group of people in India who can authoritatively speak on PR system and he had been building up the core group members of CERI towards this.
On 18 Sept. Raj will be speaking as a guest speaker in Delhi at the Constitution Club on PR system. This meeting has been organized by Sanjay Paswan in order to release his book and he has taken up a liking to the books of Raj as well as to the CERI Campaign.
Leena has also organized a major event in Bihar along with Sanjay Paswan for elected members on PR system. This will take place in October after the return of Raj from Germany. This will be a one full day event. About 50 Members of Parliament, Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, MLAs, and a few academicians have been lined up as participants. Durga Jha and Leena along with Vivek will play a serious supportive role to Snajay Paswan in making this a successful event. It will be for the first time that we are entering the State of Bihar and it seems to be a powerful entry.
All of us in CERI are now awaiting the release of M C Raj’s book on Electoral Systems. We hope the publishers will do the job soon. We are sure this book will stir up the democratic conscience of right meaning citizens of India.
