Oh, hello friends!

Short version: the new issue, "Tiny Love Stories" by Avital Gad-Cykman, is here: http://frsh.in/5b -- music by The Viccas (courtesy of Josh Hendrick, former Thieves Jargon editor Matt DiGangi's roommate). Keep reading if you're interested. If not, thanks for reading dispatch!

Before I begin my little ramble here (there's much ground to cover this time around -- it won't always be like this, I promise!), I want to warmly welcome all the new subscribers! There are far more new folks on this mailing list than there are old-timers who've been there from the beginning. Of course the loyalty of the latter group means an awful lot to me, but it's great for dispatch to have a broader base of support. In lieu of new subscribers as well as new readers, a few new files have been added to the annals at http://litareview.com/09 -- some archives which make it that much easier to quickly access past issues.

So, as most of you are surely aware, we've got this drawing going on. I'm excited to see so many people entering it. If you're reading this inside your e-mail account then you are already in the running. If not, you might want to get on the list before the 12th if you'd like a shot at the jackpot: http://frsh.in/0210

In case you didn't know, we have been giving away stickers for several months now. To be eligible to receive stickers you must only ask: http://litareview.com/stickers

In a couple months we will be doing an actual contest. Christy Call (the second wheel on this bicycle) will work really hard on a line drawing. It will become our t-shirt. To inaugurate it, we'll run a contest wherein everyone has four weeks to submit a story based on the line drawing. The winner will receive a to-be-determined awesome prize package.

Last night on the phone I told Andy Riverbed that if he referred 10 new, good bands (and I use a song from each) to dispatch I would buy him a computer (he doesn't have one). I extend this or a similar offer to anyone who knows a lot of music. It doesn't have to be a computer, but if you need something for your writing or reading or other creative habits (or even if you just want to help get a bunch of bands promoted without needing anything), refer some bands my way. I'll inform you of the status on this front next issue. Hopefully we'll be booked out for the rest of the year within a couple months. Finding/getting permission for new music takes up an inordinate amount of my time but I believe it's one of the things that really helps dispatch to stand out, and I am committed to it. Your help in this endeavor will always be appreciated. The same goes for photography. Rates are negotiable on the use of photos in dispatches. Tell your artsy friends.

In a similar vein, if you'd like to be a guest host for the audio in an upcoming issue, go ahead and record it for the issue you have in mind and send a reasonably-sized MP3 or OGG file my way. Just say something like "Hey this is So-And-So of Whatever-Place. Welcome to the 20th issue of dispatch litareview." Or however you'd like to do it. I think it'd be great to get a lot more voices into that mix. I'm sounding boring, but I think the introductions are important as well.

I'd like to remind everyone that we have an open position. If you'd like to regularly comment/inform on culture (in 250 words or less) and can do so in an interesting way, don't be afraid to get in touch. More information about the position can be found in the back of the last like eight issues.

If you see something, say something. dispatch wants to be the best it can be. If you find an error, typographical or otherwise, on the site or in anything related to dispatch, or if you just have a suggestion for improvement, don't be afraid to holla at corre...@litareview.com.

The Million Writers Award is back! (http://frsh.in/5d)

Proud to have nominated our three most popular stories:

  1. Amelia Gray, "Three Little Stories" (July) - http://litareview.com/09/15julagray.shtml
  2. Steve Goerger, "Mule Factory" (August) - http://litareview.com/09/15augsgoerger.shtml
  3. Adam Moorad, "Oikos" (September) - http://litareview.com/09/1sepamoorad.shtml
I'd also like to start publishing reviews again. We did them back in the day. They must be well-written and honest, however. Not here just to promote things, you know. Specifically I'd like 200-word reviews of other literary publications. But you can review anything you like, to include your local ice cream shop. As long as it reads well. It would be cool to run one or two in each issue. So if you'd like to write one, do it to it, sister.

Once again, the new issue is available now at http://frsh.in/5b (or just go to http://litareview.com directly).

To close out this longest-winded newsletter, I'll drop the first microfiction piece on you. Hopefully we can keep these up, but we'll see. Please enjoy and stay lovely!

"Science"
by Meg Pokrass
megpo...@gmail.com

To be with my brother and the boys and later the men and then surrounded by lovers. I was no child anymore. Once a month, anyway. Those were my simple plans, and when adults asked me what I wanted to become, I'd say a scientist. My future was full of pads and probes and allergy shots. I didn't want to be a lab rat. Eventually myself interested me. I felt that way when hanging upside down on monkey bars. I told one friend how I'd study pollen. I told another friend I would dance. I told my grandmother I would save the planet by building card houses. She couldn't hear, but watched my lips.
