Hi,

I am an Assistant Professor of Geography at San Francisco State University. My work is in the area of health geography. My more recent work focuses on visual and narrative representation for understanding health experiences.

Two weeks ago I was informed of a small grant opportunity that will allow me to initiate a hands-on project with military veterans with PTSD in the San Francisco Bay Area. In brief, the project will be geared towards having the veterans produce a multimedia art exhibit. The grant is from a humanities organization and emphasizes storytelling. As part of my proposed project, I will be having the veterans consider visual art and the production of it as a form of storytelling and mode of healing. The grant requires I identify a humanities expert who can act as an advisor on this project. This role would involve providing guidance on a curriculum that will be taught to the veterans and includes a small honorarium.

I presently have everything in place for this grant except the advisor. Unfortunately, the grant is due tomorrow at 5PM. If this is a project that may be of interest, please feel free to contact me at the email above. I am happy to elaborate more on this project.

Thank you in advance,

Courtney Donovan

I may be able to help (depends on what is involved, if one has to be local, etc.), but you might be interested in the following slide show from the public health and social justice website, which is a collection of photos and quotes/poetry/story excerpts about war and its effects: http://phsj.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/War-and-Peace-in-Literature-and-Photography6.ppt

the war prayer by mark twain is very powerful - see http://phsj.org/wp-content/uploads/2007/10/The-War-Prayer-ppt.ppt

finally, there is other relevant content on the war and peace page of the phsj website at http://phsj.org/war-and-peace/
