The Medical Humanities Program at Rice University seeks to appoint a lecturer in the School of Humanities to teach courses that engage with ethics and equity issues in health and medicine.
The Medical Humanities program at Rice University includes faculty from diverse fields in the humanities and social sciences, has strong partnerships with science and engineering disciplines, and collaborates with numerous institutions in the Texas Medical Center and community-based organizations in the broader Houston area. The Janice G. Doty Lecturer in Medical Humanities will teach 4 courses per academic year and mentor students engaged in collaborative, applied research projects through the Medical Humanities Research Institute (MHRI).
We seek applicants whose research is rooted in critical medical/health humanities and who have completed a PhD in a humanities field. The Medical Humanities Program hosts an interdisciplinary minor that attracts a diverse and growing undergraduate student population, particularly those on pre-health tracks. The successful applicant will develop courses in their field and may also teach an existing “Introduction to Medical Humanities” course.
This position is based in Houston, Texas, at Rice University’s School of Humanities and is for the period from July 1, 2024-June 30, 2026 with possibility of extension through June 30, 2027. This is a benefits eligible non-tenure track position with a 4-course teaching load (2 courses per semester) and responsibilities for student research mentoring on collaborative projects with partners in the Texas Medical Center or the greater Houston area. The lecturer will receive an annual salary of $75,000 with a $3,000 research stipend per year.
Responsibilities will include:
- Teaching/co-teaching courses in consultation with the Medical Humanities Program and affiliated campus units
- Participation in research projects and student mentoring through the Medical Humanities Research Institute
- Active participation in Medical Humanities events and programming
- Serving on Medical Humanities Program and/or MHRI committees
Eligibility:
Applicants from any humanistic discipline are eligible to apply and must have the PhD in hand by June 30, 2024.
Applicants must have demonstrated teaching experience in medical/health humanities, ethics and equity, or a related field and have excellent communication, collaboration, and time-management skills.
