The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) measures the language proficiency of people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).
IELTS is available in Academic - for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for those migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
The IELTS Academic test is for people applying for higher education or professional registration in an English speaking environment. It reflects some of the features of academic language and assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training.
The IELTS General Training test is for those who are going to English speaking countries for secondary education, work experience or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. The test focuses on basic survival skills in broad social and workplace contexts.
The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them. The Speaking section, however, can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. We will inform you of your speaking test date as soon as possible to allow you time to make travel arrangements.
A valid passport is the only acceptable form of identification. If you come on the test day without your passport, you will not be tested and your test fee will not be transferred or refunded. The identity document must be valid at the time of registration and the same ID document must be presented on the day of the test.
IELTS results are released 13 calendar days after you take the test, and you will receive one copy of your Test Report Form by postal mail. The IELTS Administrator will mail your results to the address you entered on your online registration, so please make sure your address is correct. It is recommended that you keep your Test Report Form in a secure location because it cannot be replaced.
IELTS USA allows test takers to view test results online approximately 13 days after the test is taken, which will remain available for 28 days. The online preview of scores cannot be used as an official IELTS Test Report Form, which will be issued by postal mail. Results previews are available online. Results are typically available by 2:00 A.M. CST on the 14th day after your test date.
We will send a copy of your Test Report Form to up to five (5) institutions or organizations free of charge if you list them on your online registration. If you decide to send a Test Report Form to an institution after you have registered, you can contact us to send additional TRFs. After the first 5 institutions or after 45 days from the test day, you may order additional TRFs online for $20.00 each.
If you are unhappy with your test result, you can apply for a re-mark (Enquiry on Results) within six weeks of your test date. You can choose which test sections are re-marked. The cost of this service is the 50% of the regular IELTS exam fee, which is fully refunded if your band score changes. The release of your results usually ranges from 2 to 21 days depending on several factors including the number of components requested to be remarked. If you have not received a response after 28 days, please contact us.
Experience IELTS Online - sample questionsThe practice experience will show you how everything will work on your screen ahead of the test day. As these are practice tests, they are not timed. There are some variations from the live tests, including the timer, highlighting, and notes functions performing differently.
It uses the same IELTS multi-layered security processes in pre-test, test day and post-test operations. Recognising organisations will use the same online verification system as the one used to verify in-centre results.
IELTS Online runs on the Inspera Exam Portal. After booking your test, you will also be emailed a link to download the portal. We recommend you do this at least one day before your test to carry out pre-test system checks.
This must be taken in between tests, e.g. between the end of the Listening test and the start of the Reading test.
To take a bathroom break, raise your hand and wait for the proctor to call you. Do not leave your desk without the permission of the proctor.
IELTS is widely recognised by universities and other education providers around the world. If your preferred organisation accepts IELTS Online, you can use your results in exactly the same way as if you have taken IELTS at a test centre.

How does the video-call speaking test work?The Test takers will take their Speaking test via a video call by an IELTS Speaking examiner, enabling a real-life, real-time, two-way interaction. The Video-call Speaking test will be exactly the same as the in-person Speaking test in terms of content, scoring, timing, question format and security arrangements. You will be able to see your examiners face, hear them speak, and have a live conversation with them, asyou would in-person.
