just because this is a blender forum and we use it we can not say that its better then mudbox. Mudbox is used on big budget productions. its created for huge models and has 1000 functions. its better then Blender. but its not free.
Regarding sculpt and the polycound or how much verts and hardware config.
Maximum that I got on my laptop ( AMD Radeon HD 5650 1 gb 6 gb ram Core I7 without turboboost active 1.7 ghz basic speed (it can top to 2.9 on all cores) Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit) is 32M polycount after that praise to the god cause you will need to kill the os with power button.
I think 32M it is more that enought. My advice for developer is to make a little settings on Preference Settings -> test sculpt performance and set hardware limit for ploycount. So do i not get my laptop to the all runing hd and all so. (mudbox has this it will stop at a state of maximum count).
On the other hand Z-Brush it is not full 3D it is 2.5D , it is more a normal mapping paint tool and there it is not a real geometry involved. Z-Brush does not use 3D graphic cad and only use the processor.
