The opening begins with a Zoombini named Binky picking strawberries with his friends. All of a sudden a huge rainstorm starts, frightening the Zoombinis badly so they all run into a shelter except for Binky. The shelter is inside of a mountain. Suddenly the door locks shut. They are unable to escape, no matter how hard Binky pushes. And there are mysterious creatures in there.... Binky sees he can not do this alone, so he rushes back to Zoombiniville to get help. After some discussion, the Zoombinis send out a rescue party of 16.
The player must gather up a group of 16 Zoombinis to help rescue their trapped comrades in the caves. To choose a Zoombini, there are 2 options. Features can individually be selected to build the Zoombinis, or the player can click the numbers 1 or 16 and those Zoombinis will be randomly chosen. Each Zoombini must be unique to one another.
The Zoombinis arrive here to rescue their trapped friends inside the caves. For the remaining part of the game, the Zoombini group has now been reduced to 8 Zoombinis. The player has an option of going left or right.
After the foundation of Zoombiniville, the Zoombinis find peace once more, until a small group of them get trapped inside a cave seeking shelter from a storm. They meet up with strange creatures called Boolies who occupy a city known as Booliewood. As a result of the storm, the Boolies have been scattered across the land, and their mayor, the Grand Boolie Boolie, has disappeared. The goal of the game is to rescue a total of 400 Boolies and bring them to Booliewood to return the Grand Boolie Boolie.
The story aspect has been played up slightly. There are cutscenes and everything. The basic premise is that a group of zoombinis was exploring a cave when suddenly a lightning strike activated some machinery and closed a door on the cave (which I guess must have actually been some sort of mechanical construct then?). Your initial job is to venture out of Zoombiniville to rescue them (hence the name of the game), but when you arrive, you find that part of the group ran off deeper into the caves when they were spooked by the native inhabitants. Zoombini folklore apparently labels these creatures as scary monsters, but as the zoombinis continue, they discover that the creatures are actually perfectly friendly and, similar to the zoombinis themselves, are only lost and trying to return home. The last leg of the journey revolves around transporting these creatures back to their home, and if you manage to collect all of them, their mayor will come back and everything will be peachy.
The Zoombinis get into trouble again when they seek shelter in a mountain cave from a storm. They find some strange creatures called Boolies who live in the city of Booliewood. The storm has scattered them across the land, and their leader, the Grand Boolie Boolie, has disappeared. You have to find 400 Boolies in order to restore their master. There's nine puzzles and three levels of difficulty. Each challenge tests mathematical thinking skills like organizing information, reasoning with evidence, and systematic testing. It uses information-age logic skills used for writing computer programs, organizing data, working with spreadsheets, and more. It has a new 3D look, teaches advanced concepts like networks and binary numbers and has even more wacky characters and adventures.
Attacked by a severe storm, a small band of Zoombinis seeks refuge in a mountain cave. Instead of finding safety, the Zoombinis are trapped in a hazardous tunnel where mysterious creatures lurk! Each perilous puzzle you solve leads to another, more difficult challenge.
