Postdoctoral Fellowship
A post-doctoral fellowship is available starting in June 2023 at the University of Florence Italy for a project on the development of a Numerical Wave-Current Flume (N-WCF) by using High-Fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics modelling in High Performance Computing Architectures (HPC).
The post-doctoral fellow recruited by this call will work at LABIMA, the Maritime Engineering Laboratory headed by the prof. Lorenzo Cappietti (www.labima.unifi.it) and will have access to the Italian most powerful HPC architectures. Brief description of the specific topic is provided below.
The N-WCF is proposed as the numerical counterpart of a LABIMA’s physical wave-flume. As in the physical counterpart even in the numerical installation the multi-physics phenomena that characterize the turbulent flow regimes must be simulated. This aim imposes the use of HPC and those numerical methods that perform better in parallel architectures. To cope with these issues, several different High-Fidelity CFD methods are used raging from the traditional CFD methods based on numerical integration of Navier-Stokes Equations (end those derived equations) to the methods that exhibit better performances in parallel architectures i.e. the particle methods as the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) or the meshless methods as the Smoothed Particles Hydrodynamics (SPH). The post-doctoral fellow will review the existing open access CFD codes and will develop an operative N-WCF based on the code best suited for the specific HPC that will be provided to conduct this project. The N-WCF will then be used to conduct research activities on the floating structures and wave-energy converters.
The post-doctoral fellow will also act as tutor for Bachelor or MS Students introducing them to the CFD numerical modelling and will collaborate in writing and co-authoring technical reports and research papers. He must be available, and its citizen status must allow him to spend research periods and attend conferences even outside Italy. Candidates coming from research groups and aiming at developing the CFD-HPC research field at LABIMA thus setting the basis for their research autonomy while maintaining the collaboration with their previous research group are encouraged.
Desired qualifications for the post-doctoral position include: a PhD degree (at the time of the deadline for application), in similar topics, proven experience in the CFD numerical modelling, knowledge of wave and coastal dynamics, strong skills in data analysis, statistics, and scientific writing. Being proactive in a working-team, taking responsibility for specific objectives, being able to achieve them with proven autonomy and time keeping are recommended features.
The selected candidate will be awarded a grant of € 25.536,49 per year, inclusive of the social security costs payable by the grant holder. The grant will be paid in deferred monthly instalments. Moreover, funds for publishing articles and attending conferences are available.
The post-doctoral fellowship is one year-long, but it may possibly be renewed to the same person for a maximum of six years overall.
Candidates are encouraged to contact prof. Lorenzo Cappietti no later than April 20, 2023.
