Avoiding localhost return-path

I have a development server that is inside our network and has no real
domain name on the internet.
Sending mail out to our real mail servers is required for testing our
apps.

The return-path seems to always be localhost.localdomain despite
setting $mydomain etc.. to a FQDN that resolves back to our externally
facing IP.
This localhost return-path is causing a lot of mail servers to reject
the mail.
Any ideas what I'm missing?
