Hi, I'm a FreeBSD newbie and I'd like to use Emacs unicode2 branch
(XFT integration is what I'm after). Current port version of Emacs is
the trunk version.

I can build it from the source but is there a way of creating a custom
port and registering it in the system so that other packages that
depend on "emacs" will use my customized package instead of the native
emacs port ?

I guess it is possible, just don't know the exact steps, haven't found
anything in the handbook, could you please point me to some manual
describing the process of tinkering with port settings/ ? Or perhaps
it's not worth it and I should just compile it from the source ?

Thanks

The Porter's Handbook is probably the place to start.
