Hello, I am an undergraduate Mathematics/Physics major who is thinking about
trying FreeBSD. One reason in particular is the good things I have heard
about it from other people in the math and physics departments. I am
thinking about switching from Debian GNU/Linux. My question is: is such a
transition very difficult to make? I am far from a guru, but I can at least
attain a stable, secure Debian system. Any advice or comments would be
appreciated.

Brad,

I too switched from a Linux distro to FreeBSD. You don't need to be a guru, and
in many cases you will find that the BSD's are easier to maintain with things
like the ports collection etc...I think you will also find FreeBSD to be
cleaner, more efficient and more stable. Debian is a great distro and as a
matter of fact, I like them all. I don't care for the: "this is better than
that stance." FreeBSD just suits me better. I can honestly say that I have
never seen FreeBSD crash - don't know what it looks like. I have seven boxes at
home running BSD and three at work. They have never dissapointed.
