I know of no list where people discuss the ITU in general, but this
might be of interest to those who are interested in the ITU meeting
in Minneapolis this fall.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), headquartered in Geneva,
Switzerland is an international organization within which governments and
the private sector coordinate global telecommunication networks and
services.

Though the 1998 ITU Plenipotentiary is coming to Minneapolis Convention
Center October 12-November 6, there has been virtually no word of
this major world meeting in the local press. This is the first time in
over 50 years that the meeting has been held in the U.S. This is not a
trade show--this is a meeting where telecommunications standards are
debated and decisionmakers selected.

The 2500 delegates participating in this meeting are high-level,
ministerial representatives from over 100 countries. Many are interested
in telecommunications development activities, how to bring advanced
services to their citizens. While the agenda of the ITU program itself is
set by the ITU and its delegates, in six weeks of occupation here in
Minnesota, it is assumed the delegates will want to experience something
beyond the confines of the convention center. They need to talk to real
people, who face some of the same struggles with communications and
development that their citizens face.

MN-ITU is a temporary e-mail forum to link people and organizations who
are interested in events that may surround the ITU conference. It is
based on the interest citizens have expressed in the Minneapolis ITU
conference and is COMPLETELY UNAFFILIATED with the conference itself.
Specifically we hope to use the discussion list to:

* announce events where delegates from the conference interact with
Minnesota citizens and organizations.

* organize to plan opportunities for delegates to interact with the
Minnesota public.

* discuss issues that the ITU will be addressing and their impact on
Minnesota.

It is unknown the traffic or interest in this discussion list. We hope
that enough interest is generated by this event to use the list to develop
and make people aware of opportunities for the delegates and Minnesota
citizens to interact with each other.
