estimate timeout only when scheduled through cron

I have one host running Fedora C2 that always gets estimate timeouts
unless I run job manually : amdump <dirname>
unless I run job manually : amdump <dirname>
The estimate completes fine in that case, but not when included in the
nightly run with other hosts - started through cron.
I have increased the etimeout variable to 1800, but that does not
help.
If anyone can recommend a course of action to determine the cause of
this, I would appreciate it.
