Amanda cannot restore last backup file

I'm running into the problem where amrestore consistently fails with an
"input/output" error on my tape device when restoring the last dump
written to a tape.
All previous host/partitions written to that tape dump fine.

There are no errors reported in any of the log files either, so I"m
perplexed as to why this may be happening.
It seems as if Amanda is not writing out all of the last dumpfile.
