The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) is
working on a plan to give complete autonomy to some of country’s prestigious
colleges. The move will free these colleges from the administrative control of
the universities they are currently affiliated.
Autonomous status will
enable the colleges to structure their courses as well as change syllabi and
examination system as we as allow then to open campuses.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is soon going to come
out with a regulation that will make available for select colleges the option
of exercising autonomy, said Ashok Thakur, Secretary, higher education
department.
The colleges that are going to get autonomous status are St
Stephen’s, Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Lady Sri Ram (LSR) affiliated
to Delhi University; Loyola College in Chennai; and St Xavier's College in
Mumbai, which already enjoys limited autonomy.
However, Thakur added that these colleges need to get an “A”
grade from the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) for the
status.
Thakur said that these colleges will continue to get
financial grants from agencies such as the UGC, state or Centre; in addition,
they will be allowed to mobilise resources from other acceptable sources,
