I stumbled upon this interesting paper while reading another one that mentions it: Preserving Inria's Legacy Software: A Crowd-Sourced Approach. It reports on the crowdsourced approach Inria is taking to preserve its historical software. A group of researcher sent a survey to around 6000 current and past Inria employees and collaborators:

The goal of the survey was three-fold: (1) identify Inria legacy software products (2) identify available source code and other relevant historical materials (3) identify volunteers to further help in archiving source codes and other materials in the Software Heritage archive.
