I gave up on MS Office years ago.

Nowadays I use LibreOffice, which is compatible with it

but has a less radical UI.  It understands all MS Office

formats as well as its native OpenDocument format,

which is understood by a lot of other tools.

For simple stuff I use the free Google tools (Docs, Sheets, etc.) which have

the advantage of being automatically online in Google Drive; 

you can download them in MS Office format.

You can control sharing of Drive files: public, anyone with the URL,

invitees only, etc. etc.
