I suggest we deal with this in email first and save discussion time today for annual report.

There are two project mailing lists:  lisp...@googlegroups.com and inte...@googlegroups.com.
These were set up a long time ago.  I don't think we use inte...@googlegroups.com -- maybe announcements)?
We use lisp...@googlegourps.com for lots of things, including managing access control.

We haven't had serious problems with spam on either list, although there have been some recent incidents.

right now, it's set up that you have to be on lispcore to send mail to lispcore and likewise for interlisp. But Inte...@googlegroups.com  is open -- anyone can join.  We had two cases of spam recently -- (1) we had someone who sent a on-first-glance reasonable email to ask to join lispcore and it was approved (shouldn't have been). Anyway, after a couple of spam emails  to lispcore about dryer vent cleaning, their email address was removed from lispcore.

The second instance was someone who joined inte...@googlegroups.com mailing list and then sent spam.  that spam got through. But I think it's a tradeoff -- letting people join on their own might be OK

I wonder whether Google Groups supports moderating new users, i.e. requiring manual approval for the first posts of new users.

Yes.  I just changed the LispCore and Interlisp policies to moderate posts by new members.  Let's see how well that works.  It's easy enough to change back.

May the new year bring us all clean dryer ducts and no spam.
