Anotheradvantage of the increased mower lift height as often mentioned by BX owners is that the mower does not need to be removed as often. Some light tillage, grading, or loader work can be performed without removing the deck.

Still, it is not trivial. At a minimum, you need to get on your knees multiple times, and given the soreness in my knees, and lack of visibility from that angle, I usually end up on my back. This removal is best done on a smooth concrete surface. Dragging the mower deck across rocks or grass will be more difficult.

The drive-over / auto-connect system must be adjusted properly to work. Your dealer should do this adjustment for you before you take delivery. Once adjusted properly, it should not need to be re-adjusted unless something gets bent, comes loose, or otherwise changes.

Most issues can be diagnosed and adjusted easily by analyzing the problem. Is the over-center lever tight and not allowing rotation? Does the deck slide forward instead of allowing the PTO to connect? Take a peek under the deck, and you can likely see the mal-adjusted item.

The BX gearbox has an unusually low profile. This catches the eye immediately when comparing the decks. Perhaps this low profile is part of what allows the deck to raise higher than the competition? In any case, it is clear that the gearbox was specially designed for this purpose.

The BX deck has easily removable plastic shields over the mower belt and spindles. This makes cleaning and access for service easier. The corresponding shields on the 1025r deck are bolted on, and much more difficult to remove.

Opinion: Contrary to some, I believe that if a shield is easier to remove and reinstall, it will more likely be left in place by the user. If it is difficult to remove, the user is likely to leave it off once they take it off the first time.

The 1025r offers two additional options which lift the mower via a separate hydraulic control. Each of these frees up the 3 point hitch to operate independently of the mower deck. I have much more detail including part numbers and prices on the different lift options here.

The 1025r deck now offers brackets which allow the loader to lift the mower deck for cleaning, service, storage, etc. These brackets are available at You can get free shipping on these or any other parts order from greenpartstore.

Most of the items in the above comparison are very similar. Small advantages on one side or the other. However, one major area stands apart. The Deere Auto-connect system far outshines the BX deck attachment system. Given the multi-use multi-function nature of these tractors, this round goes soundly to the Deere 1025r

I loved you better than you would ever be able to express here. The picture is beautiful, and your wording is elegant; nonetheless, you read it in a short amount of time. I believe that you ought to give it another shot in the near future. If you make sure that this trek is safe, I will most likely try to do that again and again.

what an incredibly informative and helpful blog post! Your comparison between the Kubota BX and Deere 1025R is incredibly thorough, and the insights you provide into mower setup and specs are invaluable. Thank you for sharing your expertise and making the decision-making process easier for tractor enthusiasts like myself. Keep up the fantastic work!

The Deere 1025R is either #1 or #2 in subcompact tractor sales being neck and neck with the Kubota BX. Specifications are very similar between this machine and other subcompact tractors. However, there ARE real-world differences. Our intention is to dive into sufficient detail in this review so that you can see relevant real-world information about the 1025R tractor.

Early Deere compact tractors were made exclusively by Yanmar, with very little customization specific for John Deere. As the category became more popular, Deere invested more, building an engineering an production team in Augusta Ga. This team now designs all of the Deere compact tractor line.

The engine still comes from Yanmar. The transmission is jointly designed and built in South Carolina. (The transmission housing appears radically different than the housing on a Yanmar subcompact. We are left to assume that the internals are different as well).

While the 1026R was only produced for a couple of years in the USA (2011-2012, production continued for several more years in Europe), it contained huge design improvements such as the autoconnect (drive-over) mower deck, position control on the 3 point hitch, and hinged ROPS.

We tested fuel usage running wide open throttle, mowing our yard. We mowed for exactly 1 hour, and measured how much fuel was required to refill the tank. The 1025r used 1.125 gallons of diesel for this test. Significantly more than the 0.812 gallons used by the BX2680 tested in the same way.

The Load n Go is an optional feature which allows you to lift and carry your mower deck with your loader. This allows you to tip the deck up for service. It also provides more storage flexibility. Sit it on a pallet, hang it on the wall, etc. The load n go is available here with free shipping when you use code TTWT at checkout.

The 1025R has offsetting features when it comes to hillside stability. It is 10% wider than some other subcompact tractors which should make it MORE stable on hillsides. However, it is also taller, which would make it LESS stable on hillsides. We tested this at length, comparing to a BX2680. Final result: NO DISCERNABLE DIFFERENCE. Subcompact tractors are not well suited for hillside mowing. However, we saw no advantage (or disadvantage) to the 1025R as compared to other competitors.

In our competitive test with the BX, we unfortunately did not have reasonable conditions for a good test. We were in a drought, so the grass was essentially dead! So, very little helpful feedback on this point.

Unfortunately, this anecdotal pricing does not help YOU find out your best pricing. We have heard of the Deere being $3000 to even $5000 more expensive than the BX, and we have heard of the Deere being LESS than the BX.

Hi Tim

I own a 2016 1025R and the auto-connect does not work. You can drive over the deck but when the two clips at the front of the deck hit the linking pins the deck slides forward across the lawn. I have to use a pry bar to force the deck against the link pins to get them to engage. The PTO autoconnect works fine but not the two pins that pick up the front of the deck.
