The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad is seeking an individual for the position of Librarian (Cataloging) in the

Library of Congress Office.

BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION

Incumbent of this position

serves as cataloger, preparing original bibliographical records for books, serials and other

publications acquired for Library of Congress and other American libraries, in one or more of the following

languages such as: Urdu, Persian, Arabic, Punjabi, Pashto, Gujarati, Sindhi, Balochi, Brahui, Siraiki, Kashmiri and

English. These records are to be made available to libraries and information centers worldwide. As a Cataloging

expert the incumbent performs independent descriptive cataloging in accordance with the highly complex and

technical standards and rules established by LC/Washington. The incumbent works in a complex automated

environment creating bibliographic records for material in several formats (monographs, serials, non-book materials

like audio and video cassettes, CD's, DVD's etc.) and authority records in an online mode. The bibliographic records

thus created are entered into the Library of Congress' catalog which is a highly regarded international database

available to researchers and users worldwide.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive

information supporting each item.

1. EDUCATION: Master’s Degree (16 years of education) in Humanities or Social Science is required.

2. EXPERIENCE: Three years responsible experience with library work is required.

3. LANGUAGE: Level IV (fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing of English, Urdu and Level III (good working

knowledge) Speaking/Reading/Writing of Persian is required.

4. KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of Cataloging- AACR2 2

nd (1998 rev.); working knowledge of LC Subject

headings and other applications and academic, government and commercial publishing institutions. And basic

knowledge of material selection based on the CPS.

5. ABILITIES & SKILLS: Incumbent has an ability of accurate typing to do exact detailed work on a

continuing basis. Must be a Computer literate and familiar with database and web base searching and e-sights.

1. Management will consider nepotism/conflict of interest, budget, and residency status in determining successful

candidacy.

2. Current employees serving a probationary period are not eligible to apply.

3. Current employees with an Overall Summary Rating of Needs Improvement or Unsatisfactory on their

most recent Employee Performance Report are not eligible to apply.

4. Applicants for the position must meet the

required qualifications as advertised in the vacancy announcement.

Trainee level(s) may be established below the full performance grade level listed if not fully qualified.

5. Current employees who have voluntarily reassigned/promoted from one position to another are not eligible to

apply within

six months from the effective date of the reassignment/promotion.

6. Current employees who have received any job related training are not eligible to apply in another section/agency

within

one year from the effective date of the training.

personnel having diplomatic privileges and immunities.
