Unlike comparable programs, ASN's is distinguished by its comprehensive attention to East, Central/Inner, South and Southeast Asia in the design of its curriculum, focus of faculty research, and scope of outreach activities. Presently, the Center's one hundred plus affiliated faculty represent disciplines from across the university.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic and innovative librarian with a broad background in Asian Studies, preferably with a concentration in the social sciences or International Development, as well as working knowledge of Chinese.  This position serves as the primary liaison to the MSU Asian Studies Center and related faculty across the University and assumes primary responsibility for the development and delivery of research and instructional services for students and faculty in these areas. The Pan Asian Studies Librarian is also responsible for developing undergraduate and graduate-level subject collections in relevant languages and formats.

The librarian will also have a secondary assignment in Reference and will participate in a full range of general reference and instructional activities, including desk, chat and electronic reference services that include evening and weekend hours.  Librarians participate in professional development and scholarly activities and serve on library and university committees as elected or assigned.  Other appropriate duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  Appointment possible at the Librarian I or II level.  Librarians are appointed as regular faculty in the continuous appointment system.

Required for Librarian I: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program; academic background in the field of Asian studies, preferably in the social sciences; working knowledge of Chinese as well as excellent spoken and written English; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to be flexible in a dynamic and changing environment; ability to work effectively with diverse faculty, students, and staff; ability to work independently and collaboratively; ability to prioritize and balance various unit needs; attention to detail; preparation and commitment to conduct independent scholarship consistent with a librarian appointment; capacity and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional development.  Desired: Knowledge of other Asian languages.

Campus and Libraries: Michigan State University Libraries serve more than 4,500 faculty, 34,000 undergraduates and 9,000 graduate and professional students on a park-like campus of over 5,000 acres.  The Main Library and 7 branch libraries have combined holdings of over 4.8 million volumes.  East Lansing is a community of approximately 50,000 located adjacent to Lansing, the state capital.
