Juan Ramon Jimenez (1818 - 1958) won the Nobel Peace Prize for in 1956. Born in Spain, he fled his native Andalucía at the onset of the Spanish Civil war and relocated, ultimately, to Puerto Rico. He was a prolific writer through out life, his earlier works building upon the avant-garde movement of the first decade of the 20th century. This poem represents his later inspirations, having wrestled with depression and perhaps influenced through his wife's
(Zenobia Camprubi) passion for translating the mystic work of Rabindranath Tagore.
Poets of this era were influenced by what was called "night intelligence" - think Jung - and an awakening to the omniscient in plants and animals, a nominal experience with the world.
I find this poem so rich...

Oceans
I have a feeling that my boat
has struck, down there in the depths,
against a great thing.
And nothing
happens! Nothing.... Silence... Waves
-----Nothing happens? Or has evrything happened,
and are we standing now, quietly, in the new life?
