It seems as if every day something unexpected happens.
Our nest, the heart of our community, and the original YogaWorks studio on Montana Ave closed it doors for good last Friday, September 11. Across the country, all of the brick and mortar YogaWorks studios have now closed, forever. Of course, forever is a long time, and who knows what the future will bring.
I certainly would never have imagined this happening. I reassured myself that the original homeland, the mecca of yoga in the 1990s and Maty's home base, would survive the tragic shedding of so much of the world as we knew it. So, I let go of another piece (not so little) of was such a powerful center of deep inquiry, mutual respect among yoga styles, and collective growth.
Like refuges, we float into an ocean of possibilities. For now, seemingly isolated and sequestered in our cabins; as we seek solace, connection, inspiration and news through zoom. We do not yet know what the landscape of our new future will look like. But we can journey together.
I am surprised as how I have adapted to teaching on Zoom. In a way it feels more intimate as my dog, Sita, joins us in Savasana, or someone's toddler approaches the camera to wave. Teachers always encourage students to practice at home, to make the yoga their own. We can now all take that step.
The Buddhist teacher Sharon Salzberg suggests that: “Resilience is based on compassion for ourselves as well as compassion for others.”
Let the feelings arise, feel them. I am hearing from many of you, disbelief, grief, frustration, and, once all of those arise and fade, acceptance. yes, we are in this together. Take care of yourself, and let online YogaWorks help.
Some of you have already taken the Wednesday 7:30 AM pranayama class online. Please join me and others. You will see familiar faces. Online yoga can be deeply personal as you don't worry about what other students see. Practice to take care of yourself.
I hope to see you, if not tomorrow AM, then soon!
