Sunday, Yoga Gives Back, 4:00, the Essence of Pranayama. On a more intimate dimension then breathing techniques that help you calm down or get to sleep, the pranayama practice is nothing less then threading the needle of time from our outward facing reality to the most subtle, delicious awareness of presence itself. When practiced devotedly over a period of time, experience strips us clean of all the threads of the little self identity until what remains is this priceless gift, presence.

Anna Swir (1909-1984) was a Polish resistance fighter serving as a nurse during WW2. At one point she came within one hour of being executed before her reprieve. Her poetry, along with her contemporary Czeslaw Milosz, was strongly influenced by the war.
This poem speaks so strongly of what is essential, when all else is stripped away from us. At this time we are seeing what might previously have been unimaginable happening. Priceless gifts are just that, moments of shared humanity, one breath at a time.

An empty day without events
And that is why
it grew immense
as space. And suddenly
happiness of being
entered me.

I heard
in my heartbeat
the birth of time
and each instant of life
one after the other
came rushing in
like precious gifts.
