Does anyone has any experience generating pdf from liquid generated
views?

I have looked at Prince XML, but it isn't an option because of the
high price tag. There's also HTMLDOC but that doesn't support CSS. So
that probably leaves me with PDF::Writer and Prawn.

Both of these use their own special DSL to generate pdf, so i am
confused how that would work out with liquid generated views.

That's a technology mismatch. The only glue piece that i know of is
prince and as you said this costs money.

We're using Pisa to build PDF from XHTML+CSS, I'm guessing this would work ok with Liquid - http://www.xhtml2pdf.com/ . Not as powerful as Prince, but GPL, and adequate for our needs. Handles images ok.

Prawn was our second-best option but as you say needs a DSL.
