My MacBook Pro was having trouble restarting (doesn't go past the grey screen with apple logo) so I tried to reinstall lion. However I will not advance past the verify computer elegibility screen. I let it sit like that for several hours and nothing. I originally bought my mac in August 2011 originally with snow leopard but had a free upgrade to lion. I don't have the original disk, it is not with me. Has anybody else had this issue? Or have any ideas on how to fix it?

Reinstalling, especially after erasing the disk, is not something I do every day. I'm used to my Mac connecting to WiFi automatically so when trying to reinstall it doesn't immediately come to mind that a) It needs WiFi and b) Mine is now switched off and I missed that there's a faint grey WiFi icon in the top right of the installer screen. Also, the eligibility check fails silently giving no indication why nothing is happening.

I have an old, 2008 iMac. I just wiped the hard drive clean, 7 passes. Disc Utility then offers the option to reinstall the OS, which I selected. I got a window to "Install macOS Sierra, click continue," which I did. I then get a drop-down message: "To download and restore macOS, your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple." I click "Continue." The drop-down menu disappears, and nothing happens; it will not advance to the next step. How can I get it to proceed?

If you can't find it, you can purchase a new one using the link below. Once you get the disk, boot off the DVD and run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Reformat the drive using Disk Utility/Erase Mac OS Extended (Journaled), then click the Option button and select GUID. Then re-install the OS.

Looks like El Capitan is the most recent I can install on this computer. But how can I get the installer file? One instruction told me to go to App Store, Purchased, and select El Capitan. But there I get an error message telling me I can't install El Capitan on this computer (the newer one I'm using to try to create the boot disk from).

I've found an old OSX installation DVD, from a 2010 MiniMac; can I use that? Unfortunately, my iMac's DVD drive died long ago, but I've got an external DVD drive. I tried to get it to read off of that by holding down the Option key during startup, but that had no effect. Will this installation DVD work, and if so, how can I get the iMac to read it off the external DVD drive?

I got a window to "Install macOS Sierra, click continue," which I did. I then get a drop-down message: "To download and restore macOS, your computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple." I click "Continue." The drop-down menu disappears, and nothing happens; it will not advance to the next step. How can I get it to proceed?

When I restart the computer, holding down the Option key when I hear the startup chime, first I get an image of a hard drive and and arrow. I press Return and it disappears, replaced by the Apple symbol, with the progress bar underneath. When the progress bar finally finishes, I get a grey screen; in the middle is a box, macOS Utilities, with 4 options: Restore from Time Machine backup; Reinstall mac OS; Get Help Online; and Disk Utility. If is select Disk Utility, it shows: Internal: WDC xxxx, with Macintosh HD underneath, and Disk images: Apple disk image Media, with OS X Base System underneath. I first selected WDC and partitioned it, but once that's done, I can't get to the Snow Leopard installer.

OK, I restarted and waited about 5 minutes, holding down the option key, but the image of the external DVD drive never appeared, only the image of the main hard drive. I even tried to "wake it up" by ejecting and reinserting the DVD tray.

If the old Mac doesn't recognize the CD/DVD drive, then you might have to acquire an external CD/DVD drive. There are a lot of cheap ones on the market. Just read reviews to see if they work on a Mac. Most do, but I'm sure there are some out there that will not.

I am using a Mac Book Pro 13inch aluminum Uni-body design. I can not give the specific model as the writing on the bottom is worn off. Basically it is the body style before they got rid of the CD Drive. I am not sure on how to get any further system information without an OS. The last operating system I had was Lion.

My hard drive failed a few weeks ago and I have bought and installed a new drive and reformatted it in ________. I can not get the install to work though from there I have tried several methods which list below and none seam to work.

The recovery system boots but when trying to reinstall OS X the boot process just spins and spins while trying to verify computers eligibility with Apple. I left it over night and still it did not get past this screan.

Make sure you are connected to internet with ethernet cable, otherwise the install software will not be able to verify eligibility with Apple and it will not tell you why. It will just send you into an endless loop of trying to install and not verifying.

Did you install Lion yourself or did the MacBook Pro come with Lion? If it is a model that came with Snow Leopard, do you still have the install disk that came with the machine? If you do, restart holding the C key so you boot the install disk and use that to format and install SL. Then you can upgrade to Mavericks.

If you do not have the install disk, and can boot the old drive in an external case, boot the old drive, download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner, and clone the old drive to the new internal drive. That wll allow you to clone all content and the recovery hard drive partition and make the new drive bootable.

After trying to recover it using Mountain Lion revoery portion and still no luck I tried to just boot from another computer running in 'T' mode which told me it needed to adjust the date which was set for 1/1/2002. Date and Time adjusted it loaded Mavericks just fine from my bootable USB.

I just purchased a MacBook Air (2008) from someone and I'm trying to get it started. It seems be to stuck on the "To download and restore Mac OS X your computers eligibility will need to be verified" - it just stays on the screen saying it's contacting Apple and doesn't prompt me to download anything. I'm stuck and need help! Any suggestions? Thanks!

When I would click the "Continue" button, the little selection box would go away and the screen wouldn't change, leaving me clicking "Continue" when the verification notification would reappear eternally. Suddenly, it dawned on me that for verification to occur, the computer needed to be connected to the internet.

So, I looked at the WiFi bar and noticed that I was, to my surprise, not connected to the internet! I selected my router of choice, retried the installation and verification screen, and just like that, it worked! Verification happened very quickly and macOS installation began after I selected my startup disk.

Perhaps you're encountering the same problem. It surprised me that my MacBook was disconnecting from the internet after going into the recovery and reinstallation process (since I had to connect to the internet to access recovery screen in the first place), but doing something as simple as reconnecting to the internet fixed my problem, which sounds similar to yours.

Fantastic! I'm glad someone was able to benefit from my response, even though OP's problem was stated over three years ago. ? Amazing how something so seemingly simple can cause such a headache. That WiFi indicator is very evasive. ?

Thanks. I"m restoring my old mac to give to my day and was stuck as it wouldn't install the OS. I'd hit continue on the verification pop up and nothing. On recovery it has you choose a network and enter the pass but apparently it's a waste of time as I had no signal. Signed in and downloading now. Thank you

thanks so much! My internet connection icon (on the top right) was so light as to be invisible. But I went up there and clicked anyway and it was actually there. Once I set up the internet connection there were no problems.

This was the one single piece of advice that solved my problem. Thank you. It really should be clearly shown on the computer screen that you have to sign into wifi before hitting the confirm button. Thanks again.

Hi, I saw your post today & already had figured out the wifi bit, but its still sitting on verification? How long should I expect to wait reasonably please? I hope you see this as want to throw it out of the window atm!
