Note that an email with serial number(s) is sent only for SDK licenses (Student Design Kit). If you are trying to install an SEK license, you will need to obtain a SOLIDWORKS SEK or Student Edition serial number (it begins with 9020...) from your SOLIDWORKS instructor at your school/university.
Please contact the online store/reseller from whom you have purchased the Student Edition license. They can provide you with information regarding your serial numbers and/or any questions related to your order process.
Note that SDKs (Student Design Kits, or Student Standard) are a limited version based on the SOLIDWORKS Standard package. Add-in products like Toolbox, Simulation, Routing, etc. are not included in the SOLIDWORKS Standard package. You can check the products that are included in Standard and other packages by using the link below:
Student Edition serial numbers are version-specific. Hence, this warning will be given if the serial number used for installation is not entitled to the version selected during installation (mismatch). From the download drop/down list, make sure to select the entitled version (the version you purchased) and then download and install again.
Yes. Starting with SOLIDWORKS Student Edition 2020-2021, this serial number will license the previous version of Student Edition 2019-2020. The same will be true for future releases, licensing the previous year's release.
SOLIDWORKS Student Edition licenses are version-specific, and hence it is not possible to upgrade these products. The licenses will be valid up to 365 days, beginning from the first date of activation. If your current Student Edition license has expired, contact your school/university to issue you a free home use license of SOLIDWORKS. If the school/university is not able to assign you a free home use license, you can purchase a new Student Edition license from the SOLIDWORKS student store website -www.solidworks.com/studentstore
To help assure a successful installation of the SOLIDWORKS software, the Installation Manager checks to see if there are any pending reboot requests on your system. A pending reboot request occurs when a program or installation makes a change to files, registry keys, services, or operating system settings. This leaves the system in a transient state.
As a best practice, restart your system before beginning a SOLIDWORKS installation. If it is not possible to restart the computer at the time of install, then you can ignore the warning. In such cases, restarting the system becomes the first troubleshooting step following an unsuccessful installation
Starting with SOLIDWORKS 2019-2020, add-on products like CAM, Composer, Electrical, Simulation, Flow Simulation, etc. are included under the CAD serial number itself. You are not required to input serial numbers separately to install these products. Just enter the serial number for CAD; all other fields should be empty and deselected.
Note that SOLIDWORKS PCB, SOLIDWORKS PDM, and other server products are not part of the list of products included with SOLIDWORKS CAD. You will need a separate serial number if installing these products. SDK licenses are entitled to only SOLIDWORKS Standard products. You can find the list of features for SOLIDWORKS Standard through the product matrix at this link - www.solidworks.com/solidworks-3d-cad
Student Edition serial numbers allow for two simultaneous activations. You can install and activate SOLIDWORKS on two systems at a time. Hence you can use the same serial number to install and activate SOLIDWORKS on another system.
Under Electrical Options, on the Summary page of the Installation Manager, make sure the correct SQL server instance is selected in the Electrical options of the Installation Manager and try the installation.
Blocked Downloads? If your SOLIDWORKS serial number has expired, (no longer under subscription service) you will not be able to use Check for Updates inside SOLIDWORKS to download the latest service pack. You will also find there is a lock on the download section in the Customer Portal. This is because SOLIDWORKS requires an active subscription to download the software from their servers.
Even though downloads will be blocked, do not worry, GoEngineer has a solution for our customers. With every service pack release, we upload the entire installation file set to our File Share site. The file set is compressed to a zip folder and made available upon request.
If your subscription service ends without renewal, you are still entitled to download any service pack release of the latest year version prior to expiration. For example, if your subscription service expired on 12/31/2019, then you are still entitled to all service pack releases of SOLIDWORKS 2020 because version 2020 was released prior to that date.
Following the download of this file, you will want to extract the file to a known folder location before running the installation. Please utilize 7-Zip ( -zip.org/a/7z2201-x64.exe) for the extraction process to avoid installation issues. Otherwise, the default WinZip utility, included in Windows, will flag the installation files as malicious during extraction and disrupt your ability to install.
Once the Installation Manager is opened, right-click above the red SOLIDWORKS banner and choose Disable Internet Access. Doing this should halt any attempts to download files from the SOLIDWORKS server (remember you have just downloaded the complete file set).

A SOLIDWORKS serial number is important because it determines the exact set of products a user is entitled to install and use. It only requires a serial number and installation media to have everything you would require to install a functioning copy of SOLIDWORKS. It is important to keep track of where it is and who is using it as machines may malfunction and the serial number can not be retrieved from the machine itself. In this article, I'll show you three spots to find your SOLIDWORKS serial number.
If your CAD Administrator or IT is not yet keeping track of what serial numbers are installed in what machines, a user can utilize any of the following to find out what serial number is in a specific machine.
Ryan has been in the GoEngineer technical support team since February 2008 where he most notably provides support for all FEA and CFD software offered by SolidWorks. His most recent accolade is the title of Elite Application Engineer awarded by SolidWorks Corp.
If you recently renewed your subscription or purchased additional SOLIDWORKS network licenses of the same product type as your current products, then the existing serial numbers need reactivated on the SolidNetWork License Manager. The reactivation process updates the entitlement date on the SolidNetWork License Manager server. In addition to the entitlement date, once reactivated, any newly purchased licenses will be added to your existing serial numbers.
Annual reactivation is required for SolidNetWork License products after an organization has upgraded to the 2022 SolidNetWork License Manager Server. Even if the installed products are from an earlier release, the 2022 licenses and future versions on the server require reactivation once a year.
To help administrators reactivate licenses before the server expiration date, the SolidNetWork License Manager will notify users within 30 days of the reactivation date that they are about to expire.
On the server machine hosting your licenses, launch the SolidNetWork License Manager Server application and review the License Borrowing tab. If there are any licenses borrowed, make sure the users return them before continuing with the reactivation.
In the newly opened Reactivate Licenses dialog, choose All or a specific serial number to display the associated licenses. If the Reactivation Date has passed, that license is expired and some features may not function properly. Click Reactivate to begin the process.
From the Serial #: list, click to select specific serial numbers to reactivate or click Select All to highlight all your SOLIDWORKS serial numbers. Choose the activation method (Automatically over the Internet is recommended), enter a valid email address, and then click Next.
The SolidNetWork License Manager then connects to the SOLIDWORKS server to activate the serial numbers. An activation progress window will display briefly for each serial number as they are processed individually.
DSx Client Care & Order is a new unified admin and support portal for all SOLIDWORKS Administrators and Subscription Service Users. Dassault Systmes has been working towards a unified experience for all clients across all brands and services.
With the new DSx Client Care & Order Portal you will no longer need to assign a product to a member in the SOLIDWORKS Admin Portal to grant Subscription Service benefits. Similarly, individuals will no longer need to register a SOLIDWORKS Serial Number to gain Subscription Service benefits.
Rather, entitlement will be defined at the organizational level. Your organization will be entitled to Subscription Service benefits as long as you own and maintain SOLIDWORKS products. Any contact within your organization will be considered entitled.
All individuals who were administrators or members in the SOLIDWORKS Admin Portal have already been moved to DSx Client Care and Order as contacts. You do not need to add them again and you no longer need to visit the SOLIDWORKS Customer Portal.
When accessing the DSx Client Care & Order Portal you and your team will be prompted to authenticate with a 3DEXPERIENCE ID when accessing many of the DS websites and services, including Software Downloads, Training, Knowledge Base or Support.
