I think Apple needs to put a bit more of a delay in that (e.g. maybe two acceptance boxes). When I clicked on the yes box, I completely forgot that I had several gigs of files in both my corporate and personal Dropbox folders as well as my Onedrive folder. It was the Ondrive yakking at me saying the "default folder has moved" that tipped me off to what was going on. Moving those folders created a bit of a "***" moment. It's all good and the experiece I hope will help others as well as Apple really understand the complexity of moving the contents of the Documents folder to the cloud.

hey, I think there is a way to restore deleted file from iCloud. You can find that option by logging into iCloud from the browser and go to setting. Then you will see restore files. However, the files are only kept for some days (I am not sure how long) before it is permanently removed. Good luck.

It's a bit disappointing reading this every year with every beta. People... if you read this and have not yet installed beta 1 then don't do it. At least don't install it on your primary machine, on your primary hard drive, with your primary apple id and never do it without making an disk image before. (Like with superduper or similar software).

The same thing happened to me when I changed my apple id email account. Everything went haywire and icloud deleted my desktop and documents folders. However, when I go into "all my files" in finder, all of the files that used to be on my desktop are in the all my files section.

I formatted my external HDD by mistake. This software -drill-3-brings-file-recovery-tools-to-mac-hard-drives recover all my lost data, but it is just free to recover 1gb data, any way, it is money worthy. I've looked for some programs, but all they seem to do nothing, but this software works perfectly.

Hi guys i Think i found out where you can get all the data back (and i dont know why apple would do somthing like this as it is soo stupid) when you chosse to back up your files on icloud (Which i will never do again in the future) a sperate folder is made on you mac calles "icloud Drive (Archive)" it is located in Users > " your computer user name" > iCLoud Drive (Archive) - here you should find all your files that were just deleted ! (well at least i did)

Just recently subscribed to iCloud Drive 2TB. I have about 1 TB of data on my external hard drive that I want to move to the iCloud. I am currently up to 275GB on iCloud. My MacBook Air has only 256GB & the iCloud folder contains 144GB of that data (iCloud data). So I can no longer copy files from my external hard drive to my MacBook as I get a message "Not Enough Disk Space". From YouTube, I found out that if I click on a file & select "Remove Download" it will remove that file from my MacBook (but stays in the iCloud); therefore, freeing some space on my Hard drive. And it seems to work. My problem is I have thousands of files in my iCloud folder (some are on the cloud only, but many are still on my MacBook & also on iCloud). Is there a way to 'Remove ALL downloads' from my MacBook to free up space NOW & start with a clean slate. Instead of doing it one by one?

iCloud is primarily a synchronization service, not offline file storage. For most users having more to store than space is not an issue. For others, the Mac manages what is offloaded (oldest/largest first, then newest/smallest). If you have more data than can be stored you'll either want to investigate offline cloud storage providers, or keep your files on an externals drive (just remember to back up).

Thanks Julia, that is exactly what I did also. I selected multiple items, one at the time & it worked. It was time consuming. As for the folder, if only one file inside that is not downloaded, it will not do the whole folder. Sometimes, I found it easier to download the remainder of the files & then select that folder & remove download.

If you don't want to remove all the videos, you can select multiple items at once by holding down the Command key while you click on your selections. When you select multiple files or folders, the option changes from Remove Download to Remove Downloads. Just make sure everything that you're removing from your local computer has already been uploaded to iCloud Drive. For example, here is a screenshot of a couple of folders I'm removing. You'll notice I am not yet removing the 'dev' or 'games' folders, because those have not fully uploaded yet, as indicated by the cloud icon:

Thanks Muguy for the quick response. The 'Optimize Mac Storage' was already selected. My question is: How to get it to optimize now? Because I heard that it takes a while to offload files from Mac (What is a while ? a couple days, weeks, months, I do not know). Is there a way to remove all the downloads that are on my MacBook now, so I can free up space to add more data into the iCloud folder. I know that they are already all uploaded to the cloud as I can see them from my other devices.

I tried doing by folder, but the 'Remove Download' is not an options. It is replace with a 'Download Now'. which I have used for small folders. Once it all downloaded, the 'Remove Download' appears as an options, only then I can remove all the downloads. I guess I have to do it all manually.

Now imagine you want to remove a sync location from machine A only. If you removed the location and it cleaned out and deleted the sync location, it would affect the syncing for all machines. That would not be a good design.

The deleted files and folders will be removed from all of your devices linked with the iCloud account. If you want to keep this data on one of your devices, learn how to remove an iCloud account from Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Our comprehensive cleanup tool includes a photo cleaner to remove all your blurry, duplicate, and bad photos. Plus, Avast Cleanup for Mac also includes disk cleaner, duplicate file finder, and browser cleaner features to free up more storage and keep your device running smoothly.

I am trying to work out a solution for some off-site backups. I have around 500gb of video files that are precious (family stuff, holidays etc etc). I use Home Sharing on a Mac so that I see them via Apple TV, and they are on external HDs connected to the Mac. But hard drives fail .. so I have a second copy on another drive that is regularly backed up. That's all well and good, until the house burns down! So an off-site backup is needed. Previously I had a simple solution - the backup drive would go to work with me and be swapped with another backup there. So there were always 2 drives at home and another 1 off-site. But, you know, remote working and no commute means that this simple but effective approach is not available anymore!

Maybe automation is the way to do it. If I can get these files on to iCloud drive locally, allow them to sync, then remove the local version, that could do it. But I'd have to keep doing this. Not exactly set-and-forget territory.

You can clear iCloud storage and free up space without losing important data by carefully reviewing the items you want to delete, ensuring that you have backups of any critical information, and being selective about what you remove from your iCloud account. Use CopyTrans Programs to save all the data on your PC.

A user's Desktop and Documents folders appear under iCloud instead of the local user's Home folder. This means that the Desktop and Documents folders are using space on the user's iCloud drive. Using iCloud to store the Desktop and Documents folders has the benefit of making those files accessible on other devices that are signed in with the same AppleID, but also increases the likelihood that the user will need to pay to increase iCloud storage space.

iCloud Drive allows you to keep all of your files and other stuff accessible from any of your Apple devices, including Macs, iPhones, iPads, and even Windows PCs. You can download it to your Mac for quick access, backing up, etc. For some reason, you may need to free up disk space on Macintosh HD and want to remove downloaded iCloud files from Mac, however, you find the Remove Download option missing on macOS Sonoma.

Hmm.... I've just found this problem too! Downloaded Sonoma yesterday and it's annoying as I don't want all my files downloaded on my laptop (256GB SSD), when the originals are kept on my desktop (with a 2TB SSD). But I want to choose which files to remove, and I want the security of having them on iCloud.

On the Mac Finder's sidebar, you can access the iCloud Drive and download desired items locally to your Mac. On macOS Ventura and earlier, you can remove the downloaded iCloud Drive files on your Mac via the icon with three dots inside a circle and choose Remove Download/Downloads from the menu, the selected item/items will be deleted from local, but still display there followed by a cloud icon with a download symbol for you to re-download.

Without the Optimize Mac Storage feature, all iCloud Drive files should be stored locally. When it is turned on, you and macOS can evict downloaded iCloud Drive files to free up Mac disk space. When this feature is turned off, you can still remove local iCloud Drive files before macOS Sonoma but you can not make it on macOS Sonoma.

In case you don't want to use the Optimize Mac Storage feature on your Mac to automatically upload your Mac files to iCloud, and are unwilling to keep all the iCloud Drive files local especially if there is insufficient Mac storage, you can choose to downgrade macOS from Sonoma to Ventura, where you can remove download with the Optimize Mac Storage feature turned off.
