when faronics is in its thawed state it works after rebooting thawed twice. but as soon as I boot back frozen it goes back to the original cave picture (you know the one im talking about lol). hopefully there is someone here that knows what is going on because I thought creating the symlink to the spotlight folder would have been enough but it is not and I am out of ideas. everything that has to do with spotlight in registry LOOKS OK, so I would guess it is something that deep freeze is doing to some core files possibly. any help would be appreciated. thanks for reading.
EDIT: Downloaded data igloo and redirected registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\ to thaw space and then also redirected the folder C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.ContentDeliveryManager_cw5n1h2txyewy\ to the thaw space but I am not getting results. you can only redirect hklm key in data igloo and I am not to sure where else to look. maybe I need to do more research on how spotlight is loaded. any help sure would be appreciated ;D
Another thing is, in igloo, I can only select hklm registry hive in registry redirect screen. All other keys are greyed out and not selectable. Is there some kind of setting I am missing? thanks for your help this far.
Secondly, Deep Freeze works (in part) through a low-level kernel driver for your hard disk and SATA/IDE bus. There is also a service that runs, and you can disable that service (don't: it will break your system). But you can't just remove a kernel driver by changing a few registry keys. You also need to make sure you have an equivalent kernel driver to handle the disk requests (normally now, rather using the frozen method).
The normal way to uninstall Deep Freeze is to re-run the installation program. If you can't do this, you can still boot from a different location like a CD or DVD and re-install your operating system. Most frozen computers will also disable booting from anywhere but the frozen hard disk in the BIOS, and then lock the BIOS to prevent changes. This means you may also need to hard-reset your BIOS.
It's all software in the end, so I suppose there must be a way to do this on a thawed computer without re-installing the operating system - but it's more than just changing the registry. You've got to alter some files (probably using VolumeShadowCopy) that are used by Windows itself.
I've heard, but not personally confirmed, that the way Deep Freeze enforces trial mode vs regular mode is through the system date. Standard mode will update it's trial expiration every time the computer starts. If you update the system time to 61 days in the future, you can force the machine to boot thawed.
Try this: First have another unit to install Deep Freeze and do not put any password. Then, boot thaw that unit. Copy the file at the root, c:\ "Persi0.*" (something like this). Paste it to the root of the drive that you want to unfreeze, voil! That machine will be unfreezed. You can now uninstall Deep Freeze after booting.
Try To Run Deepfreeze Installer again, it should then say you need to uninstall your current deepfreeze, proceed to uninstallation. A computer restart would be prompted afterwards which you should do.
I tried contacting faronics on 6 different occasions, absolutely no answers. I see Standard Edition for $45, but it says something like 1 year maintenance package. I was trying to ask them what that means. Is the program only active for 1 year and then you have to renew it? Or is it a one time key/installation that lasts forever? Anyone here ever buy it?
The licenses are a one time purchase, but the Support means you are getting updates and support for it. If you don't pay it, good luck! I had a ticket with Faronics that went on for 4 months, at the end of the 4th month they told me they wouldn't continue to work on the issue unless support was paid for. Being in the situation I was in I moved on to an alternative solution.
If you're using Deep Freeze Standard, there's a freeware alternative called Reboot Restore Rx. Dunno where you stand on paying those support fees, but might be worth switching over if only for some pretty hefty cost savings!
Wow, that's a bummer about the support. I used a trial in the past, but noticed it was not compatible with Win10 for a while. Then they updated to 8.30, which was compatible for a short time, then the Win10 creators update happened and it lost all compatibility (BSOD randomly happening due to a key component in Faronics). The crashed happened even while thawed. Supposedly version 8.37 (current) fixes everything. Would support include downloading updates that might be released within that year of time? And if out of that time frame, I'd have to pay for a new version?
I probably don't need support from their people regarding the use of the program. I've only ever needed it for the reason below:
I use a plotter program that creates a permanent settings file (even after a format/reinstall, it's still recognized, only DBAN has ever killed it) My machine has HPGL/GPGL built in, but the program overrides the machine so that it can only use 1 of these settings. If I visit :1130 I can see the status, but there's no way to change any of the settings. Deep Freeze has helped me with this issue. I freeze the PC, install my program and choose 1 of the 2 settings, and use it as normal. I reboot, the program is uninstalled and so is that annoying settings file. If I have to use the other setting, I'll be free to do so with a simple reinstall after a reboot.
If Reboot Restore can help me with this issue as a free alternative, I might be interested
As the On Board Monitor is broken you can plug in an external Monitor tot he NB and use that to see what you are doing. You however may be required to use a Key Combination to switch screens depending on your Make & Model Note Book. ?
in order to delete deepfreeze:
1- press (ctrl-alt-delete) all at once
or right click on the taskbabr and select
task manager.
2- after the task manager windows opens up click on processes.
3- look for Frzstate2k.exe then right click on it then click on end process tree
4- also look for DFserv.exe right click then click on end process tree
5- now go to my computer and click on it, select the c: driver then click on program files
6- look for this file Faronics and delete it
