Generative AI offers extraordinary potential, but without proactive management, it poses serious risks to data security and the integrity of business decisions. Data input by users containing trade secrets, personal information, or intellectual property may be exposed during AI model training, daily employee actions with AI, or through security breaches. Inaccurate AI-generated outputs can jeopardize strategic initiatives, cause financial harm, and tarnish reputations.

designDATA is partnering with organizations like yours to improve
productivity, user-experience, and security through
an offering as bold and differentiated as the Apple-fanatics it serves.

Yes, I would have thought they would have done that, but no.
My workaround until this properly implemented has been to create a new subfolder in the libraries folder, and place files that I'm most likely to edit/revise in that folder.

Things I've placed in there are, templates, iLogic rules, material and appearance libraries and a few other small config files.
Then I edited the project file to suit.
In the Project Folder Mapping settings, I've added only that one folder. That way it skips downloading everything else.

I regret that I mapped the DesignData and Template folders because now every time I open inventor or inventor read only mode it gets me the 1800 files every time.
Can we delete the mappings after the fact?

Yes, I found that out too. You can edit them, but once set, you can't remove them.
I simply retrieved an older version of the project file from the Vault and started again.

Since retrieving an previous version of the project file reset the mappings, I guess the mapping info is stored in the project file.

An alternative approach, and something that I haven't tried, just a presumption - since you can edit the mappings I'm going to presume that if you point the the mapping to an empty folder it would have the same effect. As in it wouldn't be downloading any files. Not a very elegant solution.

I said this in the beta forums about this very feature, if they are going to do this then do it right. So of course it's a half tested implementation that is worse than not having the feature at all.. so back to using custom API scripts and addons to do it until one day they get it right?

Personally, I think this Map Folders function should be configured in the Project Editor along with the rest of the project file settings.
It's location at the moment feels likes it's just been tagged on.

Please combine this with the Project Editor.

What would be really nice is to have separate column in the Project Editor with check boxes for the mapping.
That way you could have check box beside each entry that involves a path to either folder or file and simply check the box for mapping on, or uncheck it for mapping off.

On the other hand, what happens to the style and template manager who has these files in check out at workspace and who modified them locally without check in them. Does when he opens Inventor the vault overwrites all files with the latest ones from the vault, in which case he lost his changes.

Good question. I hadn't considered this. But I presume that the answer would be yes.
I believe the whole idea behind this mapping is to make it easier for CAD admins to enforce/ensure all users are using the same common design data, templates, styles etc.

As admin, I don't let regular users check these files out. If they edit then they've manually removed read only status on the local files to do it.
But if a manger is prepping changes, then, yes, I presume their changes would get overwritten if they were to close and open Inventor.

I checked out the projects.ipj file using Vault client.
Then I opened that projects.ipj file in notepad. It is just a text file.
Then I deleted the whole section - just 4 lines at the bottom of that file(screenshot 2)
Save the file
check it back into vault
Next time when you start, it no longer has the mappings of the template and design data to the vault.
Done!

In the past, we have stored our design data on a network drive and had the project file point to this location. For 2016, I would like to have our design data stored in Vault and have users get the folder from Vault (so the design data folder is on the computer's "C" drive instead of a network location). I believe that this will ease some of our off site pains.

I created the deployment for 2016 on my computer and have no issues. I ran the deployment on a test machine, got the folder from Vault, and received the "incomplete design data folder" error message when I tried to point to the folder in the Inventor options. I assumed that there was a glitch when I got the folder and the computer actually didn't get all the files. Not the case. All files are there.

Has anyone experienced this issue? I really would like to make this work. I found a fix that looked like it might work, but it involved changing the registry and going to each computer to do it. That is not going to work for me.

It sounds like you are missing certain files or folders from that location. If one folder is out of place in the design data structure Inventor will issue that error. I would make sure you have all the required information. In addition is this design data that you are using still in the 2014 format? If so you need to migrate it to the 2016 version.

I use Vault also and I keep my Styles in a "standard styles" folder. I do this so that if there are changes to our materials and appearances, then others can "get" this folder and they will be up-to-date.

What you could do is first copy the C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2016\Design Data folder to where ever you are storing your styles.... then do a "Get" from Vault. It will over-write any of the files that you have edited when you pull it out of Vault.

I don't think that I am missing files. I have copied the data to two different locations (vault and a network drive). The file count is the same in each place and the file structure should be identical. In the options, I can use the file path for the design data that is on the network, but not file path for what is stored in vault (this file path is on each computer's hard drive). I was able to use the file path for what is in Vault on my computer, until I deleted the design data and then retrieved it from Vault again.

I used the design data from the 2016 default location, so I believe that the design data should be migrated to 2016. I have not used the style library manager to migrate styles in the past, so my experience with this is very limited. I would attempt to migrate the style libraries today, but will be out of the office the rest of the week and don't want to create a problem that I can't fixe immediately. I am in the testing stage and won't be installing 2016 on everyone's computer for weeks.

I am not seeing a reason to overwrite the files. I copied the default files, saved them in Vault in my desired location, then "got" the files from Vault (which placed them on my hard drive). There should be no difference between the default files and what is in Vault, with the exception of the thread spreadsheet (which I have modified).
