Thu 5.7.09 Drum and Bass pioneer Paradox visits halcyon along with the
Alteration DJs for the launch of a new weekly in-store DJ session
dedicated to Drum and Bass, Dubstep, Dub and Reggae

halcyon, Breakbeat Science, Liondub International and Alteration
present the first in a new series of live DJ sessions at halcyon the
shop, Thursdays from 6-9pm. The "so new it doesn't even have a name
yet" weekly is dedicated to the serious exploration of the Drum and
Bass, Dubstep and Dub/Raggae arts. With halcyon's own Lion Dub at the
helm, his deputy DJ Courage at his side, and the long-running Konkrete
Jungle party providing a steady stream of guest talent, Thursdays at
halcyon are soon to be the fertile fields where DJs, producers and
bass fanatics from across the ragga and breakbeat spectrums come to
cross-pollinate. Just as halcyon's Nü Pschidt Fridays have featured
the latest Techno and House tracks, each week's Thursday line up will
include a preview of the heavy heavy monster sounds from our bins that
are set to debut on dance floors that week. Guest DJs will take it
from there, showcasing the finest local talent behind NYC's top
parties special visiting guests. A weekly podcast of the new Thursday
sessions will be available on halcyon's web-radio affiliate
dailysession.com

Week one kicks off with three of the five selectors behind the new
Alteration party providing the beats, plus a special appearance by DnB
mega-star Paradox who will be in the house to be interviewed by Lion
Dub, meet his adoring fans and maybe - if we are lucky- sign a few man
tits with a sharpie. Paradox, reknowned for his trademark blistering
live sets, gets down to business later that night when Alteration
takes over The Sullivan Room where he will perform his new
Isolationist album with vocalist Robert Manos.

PARADOX (Paradox Music, Esoteric, Metalheadz)

Paradox is a certified breakbeat pioneer with a production career fast
approaching 20 years. Having first released back in 1990, he’s since
amassed a back catalogue of over 100 singles on leading drum and bass
labels including Reinforced, Good Looking, Hospital and Metalheadz. He
nowadays runs his own imprints as the primary outlet for his tracks,
with Paradox Music, Arctic, Esoteric and Outsider each having a unique
identity and focus. Producing alone under the names Paradox and
Alaska, he also collaborates regularly with the likes of Seba and
Nucleus, as well as vocalists including Kirsty Hawkshaw and Robert
Manos. His appetite for touring remains as strong as ever and he
continues to astound and entertain crowds with his live shows, mixing
banter, commentary and chat with breakbeats for a one-off PA.

The musical career of Dev Pandya dates back to 1990 when 'Mixrace' was
formed with partner DJ Trax. From their first releases on leading
hardcore label Moving Shadow, the pair went on to set-up and record
for their own labels Stronghold, Mobhanded and Offset Recordings
before Dev’s Paradox guise emerged in 1996. Exploding across the
scene with a string of 12" releases on Renegade Hardware, Certificate
18 and 4Hero's Reinforced Records, Paradox soon became a name
synonymous with abstract atmospherics and intricate breaks. His Alaska
alias appeared at the same time yet focused on more ambient
productions, releasing on labels such as Vibez, 720 Degrees and
Nexus.

Pioneering a style known as drumfunk, Paradox has always focused on
the raw elements of drum and bass within his music. Appealing to an
audience beyond the confines of a club environment, his production
credits include work for ESPN, Konami and Sony Playstation games in
the USA and Japan and the Jeff Winner motion picture 'Satellite.’

Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Paradox’s success
has never been limited to that of the UK-orientated drum and bass
scene. He has collaborated with some of greatest contemporary
musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill
Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell.

His latest album sees Paradox and Alaska join forces for the
“Isolationist LP” As a a bonus, the CD includes more from the
infamous Sample Me series - specially edited breakbeat samples for
aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Paradox’s
commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to
the fans and those he’s inspired.

When he’s not in the studio, Paradox is inevitably on tour and
continues to astound and entertain crowds with his live shows
worldwide. Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he
performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back
catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has personally orchestrated
over 120 live shows covering USA, Europe, Asia and beyond and
continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his
sound.

KASIO (Let it Roll - Melbourne)
KASIO, started life as a calculator watch. During the early 00's he
discovered DnB and instead, became a selector - delivering a more
soulful, funkier, moon-walking style of drum & bass to the
dancefloor.

Giving birth to the first strictly liquid DnB night in Melbourne,
Australia, SOULSKOOL - he has followed the liquid sound from its early
roots to a present day New York City scene.

NYCHAVOK (Rockin' Audio)

Nychavok (Pronounced Nigh-Cha-Vok) is one of the new talents springing
up in the NYC DnB scene making his debut in the summer of 2007. A New
York City native, he has been a resident for The Secret Night of
Science and Let it Roll, two of NYC's biggest Drum+Bass monthlies. He
is also the founder of Alteration, a new DnB monthly run by five local
NYC DJ's working together to bring quality music acts to the Big
Apple.

Nychavok has already played alongside the likes of Klute, Calibre,
Fabio, Makoto, Dieselboy and others. Into the more dark, deep and
edgier sounds of Drum n Bass, Nychavok is all about pushing this sound
and this city deeper into all music culture. Into his roots, he is
also a staunch supporter of the growing Eastern European sound, and
will also begin to work in the production studio one of these days.

SALVADOR
DJ Salvador (aka DJ WRATH) is an up-and-coming Jungle/Drum & Bass DJ
and Producer in the New York scene. His early roots were carefully
developed over the past 10 years through direct connections in the New
York, Philadelphia, and UK scenes. Being open to the vast array of
Jungle/Drum & Bass sub-genres has helped to inspire and create his
unique and eclectic sound that intrigues crowds from the first moment
he drops the needle. No two sets are ever the same from this vinyl
junkie who uses upfront beats and intuitive mixing techniques. A long
time follower of DJ Salvador explains, "As he spins, he tunes into the
unique collective heartbeat of dance floor, and it's as if you can't
tell who is leading who, the dancers or the DJ." It's this constant
mystery of where he will take the music next that has stirred up quite
an interest in this newcomer. Seamless in flow, DJ Salvador's music
travels from Soul to Funk to Atmospheric while dropping in R&B, Hip
Hop, Jazz, House, Reggae, Techno, and Dubstep; he interweaves a vast
spectrum of sound ranging from future classics off labels such as
Soul:R and Innerground to Esoteric and InnerActive, mixed with old
school gems ranging from labels such as Metalheadz, No U-Turn, Dope
Dragon, Ebony, GLO and everything in between. By the end of his set,
listeners are awed by DJ Salvador's ability to find just the right
beats at just the right moments to make it all flow.

Besides spinning the beats, DJ Salvador is actively keeping the NYC
Jungle/Drum & Bass scene alive as one of the founding members of the
Alteration parties. Alteration is a monthly electronic dance music
event organized by 5 local DJs with a passion for bringing quality
talent to the New York underground scene. DJ Salvador is also one of
the new resident DJs for Alteration, and his dedication to the success
of the entire project has been flowing through his veins for months.
