My boss asked us to take a typing speed test, I think to gauge what expectations he could have for a future hire. I got 60 wpm with no mistakes which seems slow, but my coworker got 56, so I feel a little better. I am just curious what an average wpm rate for typing is among IT Pros. I assume coders will generally be a little faster, because they presumable type a lot more than I do (sysadmin). What is your typing speed? (We used the typing speed test at this link Opens a new window for this test).
That is an interesting question, never understood where the wpm really "fits" I suppose it varies based on responsibilities... When trying to type up a document that was hand written I am much slower, but when typing directly from my head, say in response to a ticket, the wpm goes up exponentially. However when interviewing with Robert Half recently I believe I only tested out inth e 55-60 range, but I know for a fact I can type considerably faster.
65 was about it for me, that was ten or more years ago, haven't bothered to check it since. I was actually just thinking about this and how archaic it actually is to bother with it these days. I didn't know anyone still administered these tests. Typing speed is all relative to what you are doing now. Back in the day it served a specific purpose and reason. Try banging out 60 wpm on a manual typewriter. Now it's just a carryover from that and means, frankly, squat unless all you do is type all day long and have to meet a quota or something. In IT I can see no reason for it whatsoever other than to maybe weed out someone who can't type at all.
