Hey peoplz, i would like to know how to set up my dial up internet with
SLAX. I have put slax on a hard drive, so it boots off da harddrive.

But can some one give my step by step insrtuction on how to set up me
dial up internet. I know the ph no. and user details, but i cant seem
to find da modem.

Can someone plz help me with this. Any one can email me to get da pic
of my internal modem if they will help

I only have two PCI slots in my computer and there both taken up.
The modem is on the top one and a USB card is on the bottom one.
The modem card is closest to the processor.
The Window device manager has given me this information,
Modem location: PCI slot 1 (PCI Bus o, Device 9, Function 0)

I have also found these setting in the internet connection dialog
Connect Using: Modem - Motorola SM56 Speakerphone Modem (COM3)

all help is greatly appreciated

Thanks

You will want to make sure the drivers are present and loaded. as root,
type lsmod | less and look for anything that looks like your modem.
That always seems to be the first step in troubleshooting hardware
issues.

I don't use dial-up, but here is some info from the great and wonderful
"Running Linux" from O'Reilly:

Win uses COM1 - COM4. Linux uses /dev/ttys0 - /dev/ttys3. Some systems
make a symbolic link to the active one, under /dev/modem. Find out by
doing the command: ls -l /dev/modem. If the link is incorrect, you can
change it with the command: ln -sf /dev/ttys2 /dev/modem (for example,
where ttys2 sounds like the correct serial port for you).

You will need pppd and chat installed on your system. Use whatever
package installer SLAX uses, and install the latest. pppd is what
communicates with the modem, and chat provides the handshaking.

The book goes into more detail, and depending on your setup, this could
be a long post. But these things I did post should get you started.
Either go checkout the fore-mentioned book from the library, or buy it,
OR go to these wensites for further help (The Linux Documentation
Project is a great resource www.tldp.org):

http://tldp.org/HOWTO/ISP-Connectivity.html
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/ISP-Hookup-HOWTO-2.html#ss2.1
http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html

Sorry I couldn't be more help. But I am a strong believer that you
learn more about linux through these kinds of issues, reading up on it,
and asking good questions when all else has failed.
