I bought a Lenovo Thinkpad 570 laptop that comes with Win 10 Pro.  Am I going to have any issues wiping the hard drive and installing Linux on it?  This is the first time that I've ever had a Win 10 laptop.

Thinkpads make excellent Linux machines. I have a E595 that runs like a champ. My model has a NVME SSD with Win 10, and I added a regular SSD so I can dual boot without the dual boot issues. First I set the normal SSD as the first boot device in BIOS, then disabled Secure Boot (maybe it isn't needed now days, I didn't test). I installed Linux Mint, and now if I want to boot to Windows, I just hit enter on boot and choose the NVME SSD to boot up.

I guess to answer your question, no, you should have no issues wiping Win10 and installing Linux. Your distro will determine if it allows UEFI booting. Try without disabling Secure Boot, and if that doesn't work, them disable that and see.

The possible scenarios could be

1. Look for recovery partition. Let it remain there, might be needed for warranty Services.

2. Then partition your harddrive and let first sectors of harddisk partition use Windows.

3. Install linux on additional and also create some swap space.

Its all about warranty and customer support services. Otherwise nothing is gone happen with deleting the windows. Yeah you may have paid up the price for windows licensing or something like that.

Thanks.

That's good to know.  Thanks to both of you for the info.  Mohammad, I didn't previously know anything about a "recovery" partition.  Is the recovery partition clearly marked in gparted?

Sir,

Almost all windows OEM installed laptops come with something as factory install and recovery.

Its same like reset factory settings of our mobile.

Whenever one complaints to the support of these laptop vendors, the only thing they do is factory reset through recovery partition.

Normally new laptops have a dedicated partition something around 11 to 15gb.

Yeah that recovery partition will be visible in gparted.

Thanks.

Abdullah
