Dear All,

I have an old desktop and following scenario:
distro: LUBUNTU 17.04
USB WIFI adapter
RAM: 2GB
KERNEL: 4.10.0-37-generic (uname -r)
LSUSB: Bus 002 Device 004: ID 148f:7601 Ralink Technology, Corp. MT7601U Wireless Adapter

The USB wifi adapter is not being recognised. Gone through various forums, but not able to fire it up.

+++++++++++++++////////////////////
Some troubleshooting done:

$ lsmod | grep mt7
mt7601u                86016  0
mac80211              700416  1 mt7601u
cfg80211              532480  2 mac80211,mt7601u
mt7601Usta            573440  0

///////////////////////

$ dmesg | grep mt7
output of this:

[   14.896643] mt7601Usta: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel.
[   14.896961] mt7601Usta: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel
[   97.659610] usbcore: registered new interface driver mt7601u

////////////++++++++++++++++++++++++

Thanks.

Everything I've read said the required driver is already included in that kernel. Could you please install and run this below? You may have to plug in an ethernet cable, or transfer the files through a flash drive. When complete, post the link to the results.

Thanks, that helped a lot! I would suggest not posting such a big output  inline, to help readability. Anyways, so the module for your adapter is blacklisted, which will prevent it from loading:

[/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mt7601u.conf]
blacklist mt7601u

I am unsure why that was set by default. I suggest deleting that file as root, rebooting, and seeing is "lsmod" lists it. Hopefully that will fix your issue. If not, I also found that kernel version has an issue with the realtek cards. You can follow the fix in this post to upgrade your kernel.

So now removed the [/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-mt7601u.conf]
and got the
[sudo lsmod]
mt7601u

But still not able to find it in the network manager.

Kindly see.

Ok. It's apparent that Ubuntu really doesn't like your wireless NIC! Can you check if the interface is up? Use "ifconfig -a", and post the output please.

It's getting to the point where I would just suggest you buy a better compatible wifi adapter. Could you run the wireless-info script again and post the results as at attachment please?

Yeah even I changed home to fit in the refrigerator. I installed Lubuntu 16.04.

But no success.

Will update soon. Thanks.
