Presently I am using Arena (windows based) on wine.
Thanks

Ubuntu has over 56 chess related programs available in its repositories.
You will most likely find that most distributions are similar in that.
There are chess interfaces for all of the more popular GUIs like Gnome
and KDE and there are some for X itself.

There are also play engines that many of the interfaces can interact
with so you can play against your computer. They offer from beginner to
master level in playing ability though after awhile become easily
predictable since they don't have the abilities that IBM's Big Blue has
in mathematically calculating odds of win loss based on the move.

Without knowing more specifically what Desktop Environment you are using
its hard to give a good answer as to which one to look at since its best
to get one that has been designed for the DE you use.

Some Chess programmes are Pouet Chess, PyChess, GNU Chess, DreamChess,
Crafty, Phalanx, Sjeng, Shredder and Knights. They range from simple
to expert and easy to use to complex. Most are in the repositories and
free, but some are not.
